How to Create a New Home for Your Family

As our families grow and change, so do their needs. More children might need more space, and as your kids get older, they might want bedrooms and rooms to call their own. You also need to think about your needs and wants, whether it’s a home office, a workshop, or some outdoor space in a backyard.

Here are a few tips to help you find a property that works for you and create a new home and a new life for your family.

Building or Buying a Home

The first and sometimes most difficult part of creating a new home is finding a home in the first place. You do have a few options and it’s important to think about the pros and cons before making a decision. Buying a property is incredibly expensive, especially if you want to create a forever home.

One option is to build your dream home rather than trying to buy it. This comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. When you build a home, you still have to put the work in to find a location that works for you. You want a plot of land that’s suitable for residential use and, ideally, close to any amenities that you need. You may have to check whether it has the right planning permission and zoning.

Once you have the plot of land, the hard work has hardly begun. From there, you need to design and build your property. While contractors and professionals will do the lion’s share of the work, this still spells a long time waiting before you can move into your property.

The benefit is that, while there is a higher upfront cost, especially if you can’t move into the property yet, building a property can work out as cheaper than buying it. Unfortunately, because the work is unpredictable, issues can crop up which might cost more than you expected.

Another upside is that you can design the property from the ground up. Once the house has been built, your work is pretty much done. Nothing needs to be changed because it’s how you wanted it to be in the first place.

Not everyone has the opportunity to build their own house, however. For many families, it’s more practical to buy a house and settle in. They can then change it to suit their needs. In this case, the first step is to look for properties for sale.

A real estate agent can help you find a property that matches most, if not all of your needs. It’s incredibly rare to be able to find the perfect house for your family, but you can find a house that ticks most of your boxes. From there, you can make any needed changes yourself but you still have a place to live in the meantime, as well as time to save money if you need to.

Making the Move

So you’ve found a property to move into. What comes next?

Moving house is exciting, but it’s even more stressful. Once you’ve found a new property and a buyer for your old property and all the paperwork is sorted out, you can get a moving date planned.

The best plan is to start packing as soon as this moving date is planned. You can clear out your property as soon as you know you want to move, as this helps you get rid of any junk and do a spring cleaning, while also making packing much easier. You don’t want to spend time packing things that you don’t want to keep.

Begin with non-essential items. Use proper moving boxes and packing materials, as this will make sure that your belongings are safe. You should also label the boxes, both so you know which room they belong to and so that you know whether they contain fragile items. If you pack room-by-room, you will find it much easier to not only pack, but also to sort your belongings out again.

If you have a lot of items and you find that your house is getting crowded while you pack, you could make use of a spare room to keep things in one place. Another option is to use a storage container to keep things safe and out of the way. Even better, if you’re moving across a long distance, a storage container near the new location can make the actual moving day much easier.

When it comes to the moving day itself, consider using a moving company to help you get everything to your new home. This way, you can use their skills and vehicles to move things safely and quickly.

Friends and family can help by looking after any pets or small children. They don’t understand what the moving day is and can find it very stressful. Even worse, they might get injured if they get underfoot. If they can stay elsewhere for the day, they will be more settled.

The Deep Clean and Unpacking

The deep clean is such an important part of the moving day. You might have to clean your old property before you leave, especially after it’s been emptied out. This can make it easier to sell if it’s not sold already or, if you were renting a house, it can ensure that you get your deposit back.

Unfortunately, your new property is bound to get dirty as you move in. After all, you’re wandering in and out of the house to bring boxes and furniture in. The easiest way to get settled quickly is to bring your furniture and large items in first. Place them in their approximate locations in your new home. Then you can bring in the boxes with smaller belongings.

If you’ve labelled the boxes, it’s much easier to figure out which rooms they go into. This speeds up the moving process itself and considerably speeds up unpacking.

If everything is already near where it needs to go, you can position it right away. Again, move the biggest items first. Then focus on unpacking the boxes. You don’t need to unpack everything right away but try to get a lot of it out of the way.

Now is the time to clean everything. If you’ve kept the smallest items and ornaments boxed up, it will be easier to clean surfaces. Again, a spare room is your best friend as it allows you to move boxes around and store them until you need them.

If all of this cleaning sounds like too much hard work, especially if you have to get back to work shortly after moving, you can hire a deep cleaning service to get everything back to how you want it. You can then settle in and slowly unpack everything else in your home.

Renovations and Finishing Touches

As mentioned before, one of the upsides to building a property is that you can design and build it according to your wants and needs. Once you’ve moved in, you don’t have to worry about anything else.

However, most people will have moved into an existing house and, while it might be great, it probably isn’t exactly what you want. This doesn’t have to be a major problem, because you have the opportunity to turn it into the house you want.

Once you’re in a position to do some major home improvements, you can work from room to room and get the biggest jobs out of the way. For example, if you need a kitchen renovation and extension, it’s best to get that done sooner rather than later. This allows you to relax in the other rooms of your house while the work is being done, and then you can enjoy your brand-new kitchen.

Speaking of extensions, large families often struggle to find affordable homes that can accommodate everyone. This is especially true if you have grandparents living with you or you work from home, as you need even more space to keep everyone happy.

One potential solution is to find a property with a larger garden or backyard. All of that outdoor space is cheaper than a home that’s big enough for everyone. You can then add extensions to the home to give you that much-needed extra space.

Another option is to build a garden room, which is a separate structure that can be used for your family’s needs. Maybe this is an office that’s a little distance from your home, giving you much-needed room to focus with a minimal commute. Or it could be a small home for adult family members to have some privacy while still being nearby.

Finally, don’t forget about decorating your property to suit your sense of style. Whether the home needs a full refurbishment or just a lick of paint and a few rolls of wallpaper, you will feel so much more at home once you’ve put your stamp on things.

With that, you can settle in and finally enjoy the next page of your story.
