For many new mums and dads, the idea of getting on a plane with small toddlers and infants is the worst-case-scenario for any holiday. While time spent on a tropical beach is certainly relaxing, having to endlessly re-apply factor 50 is not – especially when it’s not just you who needs protecting. Find out what we think are some of the best places to visit in the UK with small children.

Cornwall

If your family wouldn’t have a holiday without a trip to the beach, then south Cornwall could be an ideal place to visit. Renowned for its dark blue surf and endless stretches of pale sand, this part of the UK enjoys warm summers and, of course, has an endless supply of iconic British foods, including pasties and Cornish cream ice cream. If you’re looking for relaxing holidays in Cornwall, look no further than Portscatho Holidays. The dog-friendly cottages and beachside locations make it great for children and will help to make your holiday to Cornwall even more magical for the whole family.

North Norfolk Coast

North Norfolk is known for its endless skies, which feel particularly expansive when you visit beaches such as Cromer, Brancaster and Sheringham. In recent years north Norfolk has capitalised on its natural beauty, with many of its remote beaches being close to restaurants and cafes to grab lunch or dinner. It’s even rumoured that major celebrities have holiday homes out near Brancaster Staithe. There are plenty of nature walks, including a selection of RSPB reserves which are ideal for spotting curlews and other rare seaside wildlife.

Scottish coast

For families who love their wildlife and rugged coastal views, Scotland has plenty to offer. The Inner Hebrides are particularly great for spotting otters, eagles and other famous inhabitants of Scotland’s countryside. The east coast is ideal for long, windy walks along its vast coastline, whereas the west coast is perfect for drives through its dramatic scenery. Older children may appreciate the drama and serene beauty of somewhere such as Skye. The journey entails some winding through Scotland’s rural roads; however, once you cross the bridge, you will find yourself in one of Scotland’s most striking islands. It’s also full of brilliant hiking opportunities if you have older children who enjoy a bit of a challenge.

Bristol

Not only is Bristol’s harbour a great place to spend the day eating ice cream, but it’s also full of entertainment and leisure venues – perfect families who need to keep the little ones busy. They have a glittering planetarium and aquarium, as well as plenty of restaurants to keep fussy eaters satisfied. For children who are a bit older, there are also plenty of walks and historical sites to visit.

A staycation doesn’t have to mean hiding indoors and spending your holidays on the sofa. Britain has an abundance of natural beauty and entertainment, which is perfect for families who have the task of entertaining restless children. If you’re so inclined, it’s even possible to avoid a flight altogether; there’s nothing more low maintenance than a family road trip!
