What Colours Should You Wear to a Wedding?

Picking the right outfit for a wedding can be tricky. One of the first things to consider is the colour. There are a few important dos and don’ts when it comes to choosing a colour for a wedding. Below are a few questions to ask to help you pick the right colour outfit.
Is there a colour scheme?
Some weddings have a dress code with a colour scheme. This could be a single dress code or separate dress codes for the bride and groom’s side. Sometimes this colour scheme only applies to the direct family of the bride or groom, or the wedding party. You’ll usually find colour scheme information in the wedding invite. If there’s no mention of a colour scheme, it could mean that you’re free to wear what you want, however, you can always check with the bride or groom beforehand just to be certain.
What season is it?
It could be worth considering the season in which the wedding takes place. Certain colours can be better suited to certain seasons. Spring and summer are typically a great time for pastel colours like lavender, peach, baby blue and spring green. They can also be a good time for vibrant tropical colours like pink, yellow and purple. Darker colours are meanwhile favoured in winter and autumn including burgundy, navy and dark green. Mustard and amber are also great colour choices.
Can you wear white?
It’s generally taboo to wear white to a wedding as it is the colour reserved for the bride. Only wear white if it has been chosen as the colour scheme. Off-white colours may be possible to wear – especially if worn in an outfit that isn’t a dress, However, you may still want to blend them with other colours rather than dressing in all white.
Can you wear red?
Red can be another controversial colour. A red dress is very bold and if you choose something too fiery you may be seen as trying to upstage the bride. In some cultures, red is even traditionally worn by the bride and therefore should be avoided at all costs. To be safe, avoid bright red – pastel red and dark red are usually more subtle and a better choice.
Can you wear silver or gold?
Some people advise against wearing metallic colours like silver or gold because they can distract from the bride. However, providing you avoid a showy ball gown, these colours can usually be worn in an appropriate way that no one will take offense to. Silver can in fact be a great colour for the mother of the bride. You can find examples of silver mother of the bride dresses at The Wedding Shop.
Can you wear black?
Black is traditionally the colour for funerals. However, it can also be a great colour to wear at a wedding. It is a formal neutral colour that can pair well with other colours or be worn on its own. Avoid wearing black to a beach wedding, but otherwise feel free to wear this colour. For more tips on how to wear black at a wedding, read this guide at Vogue.
