5 Home Improvement Projects That Will Make Your Home More Kid-Friendly

8th May 2019

Every parent wants their home to be a comfortable and fun place for their children to grow up. However, if you were to take a survey that asks parents/homeowners if they’ve ever done improvements specifically to make their home more kid-friendly, there’d probably be a significant percentage who’d answer that they’ve only made minor modifications to baby-safe or more thoroughly secure the home for playful activities. If you’re ready to go a step further and make your house a place where your kids will want to hang out, try starting with the following five home improvement projects:

Games rooms are always a hit with the kids. Initially, it can just be a place for them to play video games on a large TV or projector, but eventually, you could also add a pool table, dart board, a few arcade gaming systems and a shelf of board games and card games. However, if you really want enough space for it to be considered an actual games room without taking up your home’s square footage, you may want to build an external structure such as a steel building. The company Armstrong Steel provides a variety of building kits that make it easy to construct steel buildings of all shapes and sizes. You can use their online catalogue to find a building that would be perfect for a game room or recreational area.

Baby gates and larger gates for bigger children can be useful for keeping them confined to specific areas for better supervision or to keep them away from potential hazards. However, any gate that isn’t firmly secured will be easy for a child to circumvent with a bit of persistence. Plus, as they get older, they’ll be climbing over those short gates in no time. A good solution is to install taller gates or two baby gates on top of each other and anchor them to the wall instead of relying on the potentially flimsy, open-locking mechanism that you’d normally use.

If you already have a bonus room, office, or other underutilized space like a garage, basement, or attic, you could convert one of those areas into a play area. The garage is usually the best candidate because the attic and basement would require walking up or down a flight of steps and would probably require more cleaning and renovation than the garage.

This recommendation is pretty self-explanatory. What kid wouldn’t love to have their own playground in their yard? You can find plenty of playground kits that are available on payment plans and, for a nominal monthly fee, your kid could have the luxury of owning their own playground in their backyard.

While installing an in-ground pool could be quite expensive, above-ground pools are a more affordable option that most families can swing, especially if you go the payment plan route. You could assemble the pool yourself or opt for a professional installation service.

Some parents have trouble keeping their kids interested at home, especially as they reach the teenage years. By taking the steps above, you can keep your kids entertained in the safety of your home so you won’t have to worry about whose house or party they’re at.
