The Importance of English Literature in Schools

18th October 2021

English Literature isn’t just about reading books. It’s an opportunity for students to learn about different historical events, explore new cultures, develop their vocabulary, and become better communicators. Reading is obviously an important aspect of English Literature, but students also develop a range of key skills in the process. I have teamed up with a prep school in Hampton to explore the importance of English Literature in further detail below.

Broadens Horizons

Escaping into a good book will help broaden your child’s horizons because they will likely learn about different historical events and customs, as well as different cultural traditions. Books like Jane Eyre and Pride & Prejudice, for example, give students a little insight into the gender constraints that were present at the time.

Develops Transferrable Skills

Engaging with literature helps students with their spelling and grammar, which will not only benefit them whilst they’re at school but also throughout the rest of their lives. In English Literature lessons your child will likely have to apply different theories to a set text, helping them develop their critical thinking and analytical skills. They must also learn how to establish a cohesive line of argument when writing essays. These are all superb skills that will benefit your child in other areas of life.

Improves Concentration

Reading books teaches us how to concentrate for extended periods of time, especially when we’re young. The ability to focus on something is crucial for children whilst they’re in school.

Inspires Creativity

Creative activities are a fantastic way to encourage young people to feel inspired and establish a sense of self through imaginative expression. Your child might feel encouraged to write poetry or a story of their own.

Provides a Source of Entertainment

Many people love to read as a hobby, as it can be a great source of entertainment. Escaping into a fictional world can allow students to relax and take their minds off of the stress they might be experiencing in other lessons.
