Exploring Australia’s Stunning Hunter Valley

The Hunter Region, also known as the Hunter Valley, Newcastle, or simply Hunter, is an area in northern New South Wales north of Sydney. It contains the Hunter River and its tributaries, surrounded by highland areas to the north and south.

The area is one of Australia’s best-known wine regions and was one of the first areas planted in the early 19th century. Its proximity to Sydney and the demand for high-quality wines from the region contribute to its economic success. It is a major tourist destination for visitors from Sydney, other parts of Australia and visitors from around the world.

Wineries

With over 150 wineries in the region, there is no shortage of places to visit. Best known for robust red Shiraz and dry white Semillon, there is  a wide variety of high-quality varietals produced across the valley.

Tryell’s Vineyards has been operating since 1858 and is one of the most distinguished family wineries in Australia. They offer tours every day, giving the best general introduction and overview of the production, history and importance of wine in the region.
