Storage Tips to Make the Most of Your Bedroom

10th March 2020

I’ve talked recently about how I am slowly working on improving our house, whether that’s to sell it or live here a while longer. It’s already making me feel so much better and less anxious — the lounge is so much more comfortable now and looks so much better after we painted it and got a rug and new cushions, and I’ve changed a few bits in our dining room and got some great art for it too.

Next, I’d really like to make some changes to our bedroom as it is just quite dark and hasn’t been updated since we first decorated it when we moved in. It’s also a bit of a mess and I’m sick of having piles of stuff everywhere and everything is in desperate need of being organised so that it is a nice, relaxing space once again, and it can help me to switch off rather than stress out!

So storage and organisation is top of my list to improve upon in my bedroom, but I’d also like to change the one wall of wallpaper that we have, as I’m not keen on it anymore, although that isn’t a top priority. The overhead light has never been sorted properly and having a lovely bright light there would help (me do my make-up!) and also look much better. You can get some stunning LED pendant lights from Light Supplier and we have high ceilings in our house so a feature light would look great hanging over the bed, whilst still being out of the way!

I’ve recently got a big rug for the wooden floor, which I love and it’s really made such a difference and feels so much cosier. So my next job is to go through every single cupboard and drawer and pile of crap, and clear it all out and find places for the stuff we want to keep.

A clutter-free bedroom is essential to create a calm space for a good night’s sleep, for both children and adults. My house isn’t huge, and having a child means that there is always so much stuff around, which drives me crazy. So it’s really important that we have really good storage to tidy everything away and keep it organised, so that the bedroom at least is a nice place to relax and wind down at the end of the day.

So if you’re dealing with a small bedroom or just have a lot of stuff, it is important to find the best ways to store what you have.

Here are my top tips for making the most of your bedroom space.

1) De-clutter as much as you can. With clothes, if you haven’t worn them over the last year, you’re probably not going to. If it’s still in good shape and worth something, consider selling it, or give it to charity. Get everything out and create four piles: ‘keep’, ‘sell’, ‘charity’ and ‘bin’. Go through everything else in the room. Are there toys that are no longer used, outdated paperwork, books that you don’t need to keep? Only hold on to what you love and what you use.

Otherwise, if you have some belongings that you really don’t want to let go of and know you will use in the future (loads of baby clothes perhaps, or a piece of furniture that you want to keep but don’t have room for right now), then it is worth considering using a storage company such as Shurgard to store it for you and give you more space.

2) Make the most of the space under your bed. You can store so much stuff under there, from toys to clothes and photos and folders. A great way of keeping it all in order is to use boxes – there are lots of plastic under-bed storage boxes out there, that keep things easy to access, but out of the way. One great way of using the space is to invest in a storage bed. They look stylish but are practical too – the bed can be easily lifted to reveal substantial storage space underneath.

3) High shelving is a great way to open up floor space. Consider adding shelving high up along the length of the room or in the space above the bed. This is a great place for books and attractive storage boxes or wicker baskets to keep other less used items in.

4) Make the most of the space next to your bed. If there’s room, utilise a small chest of drawers rather than a table to boost drawer space, and add shelving above for books and lighting. And if there’s not enough space for any kind of bedside table, you might just be able to find the space for a small shelf to store night-time essentials or even a small shelf with a built-in drawer.

5) Maximise your drawer and cupboard space. Add dividers to drawers so you can neatly organise all your clothes, and add extra shelving and inner-door racks and hooks to cupboards to make sure you’re making the most of the available space. You could also vacuum-pack out-of-season clothing, and remember to label it so you know what’s in there.
