My Home Style and the Pieces I Love #MyInteriorStyling

12th March 2018

My home is really important to me. It is where I spend the majority of my time and where I feel most comfortable, and so it really matters to me that I like how it looks, and that it is cosy and inviting, and makes me happy to be there.

My home style has changed quite a lot over the years, and now I am at the point where I want to redecorate most of the rooms and change some of the furniture. A lot of the contents of my house have come from IKEA, but I also have a few older treasured pieces, that have been in my family for years. My house has really nice high ceilings and lovely features like cornicing and fireplaces, so some of the rooms, like my lounge, are really lovely, but need some work to look their best again now.

My dining table and chairs used to be my uncles, and it’s really lovely solid pine and I love it. I’d really like to sand it all down and revarnish it again. Then I have a corner cabinet that is really old and was my Granny’s, that I repainted last year to fit in more nicely in my dining room. It was a really dark wood, but I painted it a very pale grey colour and I’m really happy with how it looks now. It fits in much better.

I think I aim for minimalism in my style, and I really like that look, but probably end up more an eclectic mix of shabby chic (or possibly just shabby..) with touches of Scandinavian. My dream home would probably be filled with a mix of more modern and minimalistic pieces, but with lots of cosy touches, and some older and more special bits. I like things to look quite clean and white, but I also love splashes of colour, so it would probably vary from room to room. Plus I obviously have a child, so there’s always going to be toys and mess around, and my fridge tends to look like this:

I like my house to look clean and not full of clutter, but I also like our personalities and our lives to show up around it too. I want our home to be real and ‘us’, rather than perfect.

I’m longing right now for a bright and white bedroom, with cosy throws and rugs in blush pinks and pale greys, to make it warm and relaxing. Julian Charles do some gorgeous throws; I love this duck egg blue one. I’d love a comfy pink velvet chair in one corner so I could snuggle up and read there, and furniture with clean lines. I’d love for my bedroom to be very minimalistic, and not filled with all the clutter it is now – it definitely isn’t my favourite room right now, and isn’t particularly conducive to helping me to relax and drift off to sleep. I’d like candles, and blankets and beautiful bedding, not piles of clothes to sort through and overflowing drawers.

I wanted my study (really it’s just a room I use as my office that you walk through to get to the bathroom, but ‘study’ stuck early on) to feel airy and bright, so I chose a very pale grey for the walls, but with touches of yellow to bring it all together and liven it up, and I love my bright yellow cushions from Homesense. They’re sitting on top of a very old ottoman that was also my Granny’s. I need to repaint it and then recover the top of it – I bought a cool black and white print material a while ago, that will look really cool with the yellow, but I haven’t got round to doing it yet!

I’d say I’m quite particular in my interior style and tastes; I don’t like anything too fussy or gaudy. I like modern but I also love traditional as long as it fits with the style of the room, and again isn’t too fussy.

My dining room is painted white with pops of red and a grey sofa.

I love this new lamp in my lounge, but I’m so desperate to paint the walls. I have a taupe colour picked out for it.

I think you can tell that I don’t exactly have one particular style or look for my house, and I think I’m okay with that. Some rooms I want to be fun and bright with pops of colour, others I want to be calming with soft muted tones and I really like using accessories to add colour and interest to a room.

I can’t wait to spend some time redecorating the rooms in my house and bringing them in line with my current tastes, whilst brightening up the whole house at the same time.

Do you have a particular style that you love for your home? Or is there an interior style that you’d love to have? Let me know in the comments!

This is a collaborative post with Julian Charles.

I love your Granny’s cabinet! I like bright, white spaces and I love teal although together they can look a bit clinical, I need to inject more colour and texture 🙂 x

Thank you Mim! I love it too 🙂 Ooh yes, I love teal too! I actually bought a really bright teal paint ages ago to do one wall on my landing but have never got round to doing it! x
