Whether you’re expecting your first child or you simply want to make your home more comfortable for your existing family, creating a nurturing environment is important for all.

It’s one thing to transform your space into something more aesthetically pleasing, yet it’s another task altogether when it comes to child-proofing your home to make it more functional. The good news is that you can create a space that is chic yet family-friendly.

While it may seem overwhelming at first, the process will be much simpler if you understand the main areas to focus on.

Here’s what you need to know:

Maximising functionality

One of your top priorities should be functionality. Your home needs to be practical for both you and the little ones, which means you should think about their priorities as well as yours. For example, make sure their go-to objects are easily accessible.

Clever storage is key for storing inevitable clutter in the form of toys, games and puzzles. You can go for soft baskets or sturdy crates – whichever style you prefer for your space. You could also consider bespoke storage solutions such as inbuilt wardrobes and shelving units.

You’ll need to make smart choices when it comes to furniture. Opt for materials and surfaces that can be wiped down easily. You could also go for furniture that has additional storage built into it, such as beds with drawers.

Space for Family Bonding

Having solid spaces for family bonding is hugely important. This could include the living room for watching films together or the kitchen and dining room areas for mealtimes.

Many new build homes are ideal for families, as they offer spacious open-plan living areas which is optimal for bonding time. Naturally, you might opt for a home with a big kitchen diner, for example, but you can also enhance space by reorganising furniture and decluttering.

Being able to eat, cook and play board games together in roomy parts of the home will create invaluable bonding opportunities.

Childproofing

Safety is key, hence the importance of childproofing your home. Beyond purchasing socket covers to prevent little fingers from gaining access, you should also store certain items, from candles to fragile ceramics, out of reach.

You can also buy child-proof locks to store valuable or dangerous items away safely. Sharp corners on furniture can be tackled by moving items around or by purchasing silicone covers that help protect small tots from getting hurt.

Make sure any heavy furniture is well secured to prevent accidents. Consider the stairs, too, and purchase baby gates if needed.

Prioritising Comfort

Once you’ve ironed out the hazards, you can focus on comfort. Choose vibrant soft furnishings that make the space colourful and inviting for everyone. Keep comfy blankets and throws handy so that the kids can enjoy napping or cosying up together with ease.

You might also want to incorporate mood lighting into certain spaces, such as the living room and the kids’ bedrooms, to help create a calming atmosphere. This can be especially helpful as you approach bedtime.
