Making Over My Living Room For Spring

15th February 2019

When we first moved into our house around ten years ago, we did up the whole place from scratch as it was very old-fashioned, dirty and a mess! Everywhere was re-plastered, we put a wall between the lounge and dining room so that we had two separate rooms, had a new kitchen and flooring, and we decorated everywhere.

Now after living here for so long (which wasn’t the original plan) everywhere desperately needs doing up and decorating again. One room that I particularly want to improve as soon as possible is the living room. It’s a room that we obviously spend a lot of time in, so it’s important that it looks nice, but it is currently in desperate need of a makeover.

I hate the colour of the paint that we chose all those years ago – a cream on three walls, and a chocolate brown on the feature wall, plus it has peeled off in a few places due to a touch of damp. I did actually choose a nice simple stone colour ages ago and bought the paint, but then never got around to doing it!

So that is the first thing that needs doing, and then I would love to hire a carpet cleaner to clean our cream carpet that is in desperate need of a deep clean! Then I would love to get a nice big rug for the middle of the room to make it nice and cosy. Probably something reasonably simple like this pink one from Fishpools to bring everything together. I would really like to brighten up the room and make it look fresh and clean, after having the dark wall for so long and it just looking so dull. So I would try to keep most of the colours light and fresh, possibly with some bright colours thrown in.

And sometimes I just want my house to be full of quirky and unusual stuff, like this fun mouse lamp. Ashley James is someone who does this look really well in her flat. She has so many different patterns and textures and bright colours, and it all looks amazing together. I’m not sure I’ve got that eye, for it, unfortunately, so if I did the same it would most likely just look like a mish-mash of things that don’t go! Plus I don’t want to be in this house forever, so don’t want to spend a ton of money on it doing it up, so for now, I just want to freshen it up and keep it quite simple.

I mean I would love something like this blue plush velvet sofa and the matching chair, although I probably wouldn’t have it in a main living room (so I’ll have to save it until I have a bigger house!). And I have loved this bright yellow Joules sofa for ages. I do have a thing for velvet sofas at the moment, although so does everyone else it seems.

I’d love to have a big coffee table in the centre of the room (although Ava might disagree) and something like this would be nice. This would really fit with this year’s home trend of a country rustic style, with natural wood alongside stylish, modern sofas.

I want my living room to be super cosy and comfortable, with lots of throws to grab and snuggle up with, whilst reading a book or watching tv. I already have some lovely throws, but I’d like to get some new cushions as mine are looking a bit worn now. I got a new table lamp and a floor lamp (this one) that would go with the stone paint I have chosen not so long ago, so I’m happy with those. The room could do with some new curtains that aren’t so dark as the ones I have now, and I think a big mirror on the wall would really help to open the room up. I love this one, and I also like the look of more than one mirror together, like this.

I can’t wait to get started on making over my living room, and really making it lighter and brighter with paint and accessories, and having a room that I love to relax in again.

Do you have a lovely lounge to relax in? Or is yours ready for a spring makeover too?

This is a paid partnership with Fishpools. See my full disclosure policy here.
