Are You Ready To Stay Cool This Summer?

15th February 2024

Staying cool and comfortable is essential to feeling your best when the sun is out, but the heat can be pretty pervasive these days! Indeed, this summer is set to be a hot one; are you ready to keep your home cool throughout it? You’ll need to be careful about your home’s insulation and just how much airflow you let in. But with tips like these on your side, that won’t be as hard as it sounds.

Keep as Much Sun Out as Possible

Is your house south or east-facing? Then it’s going to receive a lot more sun than someone who has a house set northwards or towards the west. As such, you’re going to want to keep as much sun out as possible.

You don’t want to keep the blinds and/or curtains open throughout the day, even though the sun’s rays are beautiful. Invest in reflective versions now and keep them tightly closed to prevent the heat from crawling over your windows and turning any cool air into warm heat as it goes.

Check Out Your Home’s Energy Rating

If your home doesn’t have a good energy rating (usually C and above), it’s time to invest in more energy-saving efforts. If you don’t already have an energy performance certificate, known as an EPC, call up EPC Surveyors near you and get your home assessed. The results will tell you how to maintain a better, more constant temperature throughout your home no matter what time of year it is. And remember, you’ll save money on your bills as you go, so these efforts will definitely be worth it!

Open Windows at Night

If you only open the windows at night, you’re only going to let the coolest of the air available during summer in. This helps to prevent any warm air from being breathed through the biggest draft gap your house is subject to.

Keep the windows closed during the day to maintain as much indoor cool as possible, and then open them up at nighttime to refresh and top up that level of natural chill you’re after. If you don’t have an AC unit to use, this is something to try for a couple of weeks from June onwards.

Get an Air Loop Going

Air loops are a natural form of AC – this follows on well from the point just above about keeping your windows open at strategic times. Indeed, in the late spring, open as many windows as possible to keep the air flowing and looping around your house. If you’re worried about bugs and/or other things getting inside, buy a few mesh screens or only keep the windows open for around an hour at a time whilst you’re awake.

Preparing for summer right now will save you money! Don’t let the cold trick you into thinking the heat won’t turn up – look into the above and think about making changes before the hot season really does hit!
