What are the Best Ways to Listen to Music?

Music is something that people have been enjoying for centuries – and there are endless benefits to listening to it. While the sheer amount of genres makes music accessible to everyone, the way in which you can listen to it also opens up more avenues.

You might be a live music fanatic, with gigs and concerts lined up all year long. Or, you might prefer to listen to your favourite tunes by streaming while on the go. Some people are also embracing retro options, such as vinyl and CDs. The likelihood is that you’ll alter how you listen to music depending on who you’re with.

However you like to listen to music, there are plenty of options out there – here’s a breakdown.

Retro methods

Increasingly, people are tapping into old-school methods of listening to music. It isn’t just the older generation either, as people of all ages are buying their favourite artists’ CD albums, as well as vinyl. Statistics show that vinyl records in particular hit their highest point in the UK since 1990.

Many people find it nostalgic and more enjoyable to listen to music in this way. If you’re at home and have a CD or record player, it can be satisfying to browse your collection and be more intentional with your music choices.

Online streaming

Online streaming has come on in leaps and bounds in the past decade. You can take advantage of more sophisticated features, such as the ability to create collaborative playlists, queue songs and more. Perhaps one of the biggest appeals of online streaming is its portability, allowing you to listen to music from your phone whether on public transport or at work.

Considering the quality

For some people, quality can be a big part of how they decide to listen to music. Generally, well-made vinyl gives the best sound quality because the grooves on the disc replicate the waves from the studio where the music was recorded. It’s worth bearing in mind that any scratches can hinder the quality, however.

Meanwhile, CDs aren’t quite up to the same level as vinyl, however, they are less brittle and easier to look after. Online streaming involves lower-quality files, such as MP3 files, which are compressed to maximise storage. This compromises the quality to an extent.

In reality, unless you’re hugely into your audio quality, you’re more likely to choose your preferred method based on practicality and personal preference. Some people enjoy collecting CDs and vinyl as a hobby and will therefore make the time to listen to music in this way, whereas others are more likely to use online streaming out of convenience.
