There’s no wonder that so many people want to move to the UK. This, after all, is a land that offers oh so much – there’s beautiful nature, plenty of outstanding events and museums, and generally a good atmosphere around the country. If you can overlook the weather situation, then you’d have to say that this little land of ours really isn’t so bad! If you’re thinking about joining us here, then, first, welcome. Second, there are a few things that you’ll need to know. We’ll run through some of the most useful tips below.
A Varied Land
The UK can seem small from the outside. And it’s true that it’s not the largest. Yet there’s a lot packed into this country. Take a drive from one end to the other, and it can feel like you’ve passed through several countries. Not because of the varied landscape, but because of how much identity is packed into each city. If you’re going to move here, then you’ll need to think carefully about where you’re going to live. There’s a massive difference between living in London and living in Glasgow, for instance. It’s safe to say that there’ll be a location that’s right for you, however!
Handle Logistical Matters
The UK is broadly welcoming to outsiders, but you’ll still need to get a visa if you’re going to live and work here. Fortunately, there are many routes you can take to get a visa. Some of these visas may seem short-term, but many will allow you to apply for indefinite leave to remain after 5 years. That means that you can dream of spending the rest of your life in the UK, even if your current visa is only for a limited amount of time. It’s a good idea to begin the visa application process as early as possible because sometimes, they can take a little while to come through.
Finding Work
Unless you’re independently wealthy, you’ll have to work while you’re in the UK. Ideally, you’ll sort a job through your current company before you land. But if that’s not possible, then you’ll have to look for a job once you’re on the ground. There are plenty of websites that’ll highlight all the available jobs. A good idea is to sign up with a recruitment agency – they’ll likely be able to get a temporary job for you while you wait for something longer-term.
Find a Community
You might be excited to move to the UK, but the truth is that the initial excitement will wear off. That’s true no matter where you move to! If you’re going to make the UK feel like your home, then you’ll find a community of people. There are plenty of ways that you can do this. You could look up people from your home country who have also moved to the UK, or you could attend a MeetUp event. There’s also the option of just visiting a pub and striking up a conversation with people there!
