The Hostess with the Mostess: Giving the Guest Room a Hotel Makeover

10th April 2018

There is nothing more luxurious than being able to provide your friends and family with a guest room which has been beautifully decorated. By providing your guests with some home comforts and some hotel-style furnishings you can create a guest room that you are not only really proud of but one which provides friends with a wonderful and memorable experience.

Introducing Hotel Chic

Pick a theme and stick with it. You could choose to inject a bit of pizzazz and introduce a boutique hotel theme, with feature wallpaper and an eclectic mixture of furniture. Or, you may be more tempted to create a fresh and sophisticated setting by following a more refined hotel-esque vibe. If you are going for boutique, look out for quirky artwork, stylish feature wallpaper and vibrant colours such as purple, mustard and inky blues. For the more neutral and minimalist look, keep tones light and introduce classic furniture such as a comfortable leather arm chair, wooden furniture like small oak cabinets and pastel coloured soft furnishings. Both looks are best finished with cool, crisp sheets which are freshly laundered. Even though your guest room isn’t possibly used as often as other bedrooms in your house, it is still important to invest in some good quality linen to avoid loved ones being uncomfortable. So, take into account the material and thread count of your bedding and towels. Layer your soft furnishings on the bed and floors to create a more welcoming finish. For instance, over lay two differently textured throws on the end of the bed with some matching cushions.

Create symmetry

To achieve a truly authentic hotel style, keep the room symmetrical. Matching bed side tables and lamps are a must, and if it is a twin room, make sure both beds have matching bedding. Either pick one large piece of artwork or a few smaller pieces which compliment one another to place above the beds. Keep cabinet tops and bed side table surfaces clear so that your guests can feel more comfortable leaving their own items there to make it feel homelier. However, some items that are a thoughtful addition to a guests bedside table, are a box of tissues and an alarm clock. It would also be a beautiful touch to place a jug of flowers to add some greenery to the room.

The 5* finishing touches

Spoil your guests with some thoughtful finishing touches. Leave fresh, folded, fluffy towels on the end of their bed, and you could also pop some slippers on top. I always try and keep a scented reed diffuser in the guest room to keep it smelling lovely and fresh. Use either light citrusy smells as they are so crisp and welcoming or lavender based aromas as these are proven to encourage sleepiness and calm. Small home comforts make a room instantly more inviting. Why not leave out a hot water bottle and an extra blanket in the wardrobe for the colder months? It would also be a charming finishing touch if you put out some mini toiletries in case your guests forget their toothpaste.
