The Countries I Have Never Been to But Would Love to Visit

11th October 2022

I absolutely love travelling, both in this country and overseas, but I haven’t actually been abroad for ages now – not just because of Covid; I just haven’t had the chance to for quite a few years, and I really miss it.

Trogir, Croatia

I think travel is so good for us. Not only is it a great experience as a whole, but getting away from it all, feeling the sunshine on our skin and sand between our toes, or exploring a new place on foot and forgetting about our busy lives at home, getting off our phones and taking a proper break is so good for our mental wellbeing and overall happiness.

So I’m desperate to travel somewhere for a week or two, to get away from everyday life and housework for a little while and to see somewhere new and experience a different culture. So I thought I’d write about some of the places (not all of them are strictly their own country) that I would really love to visit one day and that I’m dreaming of disappearing to right now.

The Countries I Would Love to Visit

Croatia

When I was a teen, all of my female friends went on holiday to Croatia. I couldn’t afford to go as I was already going abroad with my flipping boyfriend that year, and I’m still a bit gutted that I missed out! It is somewhere I have wanted to go ever since – it looks so beautiful and full of culture. I previously wrote about Dubrovnik, and it sounds brilliant, so I’d love to go there as well as some of the stunning places that are more off-the-beaten-track. It looks like such a beautiful place, with beautiful beaches and stunning historic cities to walk around.

Hvar, Croatia

Ireland

Even though it’s not too far away from us here in good old England, I have never been to Ireland before! I think I would absolutely love it – I adore an Irish accent for a start, so I would probably be pretty happy just sat in a pub with a Guinness, listening to that lovely lilt all day.

But then there’s also the beautiful scenery and incredible beaches, cool cities like Dublin to explore and the quaint villages that have featured in so many books I’ve read that were set in Ireland. I would love to do a road trip around Ireland, ideally just with my husband – I think that would be a brilliant way to see the country and enjoy everything it has to offer.

I would really love to spend some time in beautiful Connemara, exploring the tiny coves and bays and seeing some Connemara ponies! I think it would be great to stay in a friendly Connemara hostel and get to experience the Irish charm and really get to see the area. I particularly love the idea of glamping at the base of a mountain and then waking up each day to beautiful views and heading out to explore the area on bikes! I think that would be so much fun.

Ireland has tons of world-class chefs and restaurants – you can find out more about them on Square Meal IE – from oysters and fresh lobster on the West Coast to gourmet pub grub and everything in between; Ireland has so much to offer for foodies. I think I would be very happy eating and drinking my way through Ireland with full Irish breakfasts, complete with black pudding, all the seafood and plenty of potatoes!

France

I’ve only been to France once before, when I was a teenager, and it poured with rain for the couple of days we were there! So I don’t feel like I have got to see it at all, and so I’m not really including it as somewhere I have been!

I have always, always been desperate to go to Paris – I know it’s a really touristy place to choose and not everyone’s cup of tea, but I would love to see all the sights and enjoy some café et croissant!

I would also really love to see the whole country more and some of the less-touristy places. I’d love to stay in a villa near one of the gorgeous beaches or do a road trip around some of the country so we could explore and have lots of two of my favourite things – cheese and wine!

Iceland

I really hope I get to experience Iceland one day. It seems like such a magical place, and it would be brilliant to try and see the Northern Lights as well as experience the hot springs and go puffin-spotting and whale and dolphin-spotting. I’d love to see Reykjavík but also go beyond there and see some of the more wild side of the country.

Volcanoes come to my mind when I think of Iceland’s rugged terrain. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to visit a volcano in Iceland. I’ve never seen one before, and I think would be so interesting.

Iceland would be such a different travel experience to a usual ‘summer holiday’, and I think it would be great to go as a family. The scenery looks and sounds incredible, and I would love to be able to take Ava there one day.

Jersey

My husband lived in Jersey for a few years when he was really young, and I have always wanted to go on a family holiday there. It always looks like a beautiful little island, with really lovely unspoilt beaches, and it would be so fun cycling our way around the largest of the Channel Islands.

The island is usually the hottest place in the British Isles during the summer months, with the temperature averaging a few degrees higher than everywhere else, so it would be great to have a week or two there over the summer, visiting its attractions and eating their excellent food.

Aruba

Aruba looks so incredibly beautiful, and I really hope that I get to go one day. It is sunny and dry pretty much every day, and it is home to one of the “Top 10 Beaches in the World”, although they all look incredible.

Aruba is great because although you can spend all of your time lazing on the beach with a cocktail in hand, enjoying the beautiful scenery, there is also loads of more energetic stuff you can do there if that’s what you enjoy. I like a good mix of both, so it would be great for us as a family. There’s the beautiful Arikok National Park to visit, hiking through the Guadirikiri Caves, watersports, and so much more.

Have you been to or would you love to go to any of these places? What countries do you have on your travel bucket list?
