Refreshing My Home: Things I Want to Change in the Next Year or So

8th November 2019

I’ve lived in my house now for almost ten years, and so despite doing the entire place up before we moved in, we haven’t really updated it again since then, and it is an old house meaning that there is now so much that needs doing.

We can’t afford to do the whole thing up again, unfortunately, but there are some things, in particular, that would really improve the look of our home and not take all of our time and money all at once! It is an ongoing project and I do wish that we could just do it all now, but of course, that isn’t possible, so these are the things that are next on my list to fix or update over the next year or so.

Refreshing My Home: Things I Want to Change in the Next Year or So

Paint the lounge

The lounge in my house is painted a dark chocolatey-brown on one wall and cream on the others. I loved it when we chose it but now I absolutely HATE it with a passion. I decided on and bought a lovely pale taupe colour ages ago and yet I still haven’t got around to painting it yet! The main reason I haven’t just bloody got on with it is because there are a few small areas that need Polyfilla-ing first and I just do not want to do that. My one experience with Polyfilla was in my bathroom and the bumpy mess I created is still there to be seen today.

So I’m basically hoping some nice person will come along and do that for me so that I have fewer excuses to not paint the damn room. But regardless, this room WILL be painted in the next year.

And while we’re at it, I want to paint the main wall of the landing a really bright colour, maybe some kind of teal. I love white walls usually but I’m bored with them.

Update the bathroom

When we first moved into our home it had recently had a new loo and sink, but we had to get a new bath. But then we had problems with the shower leaking and so the side kept getting taken off and so it’s now a bit of a mess and has started to crack, and plus the whole room is a bit of a mess now. It needs Polyfilla in a few places (doesn’t everything!) and then repainting white, and to be honest, we could do with a new floor too because the floor tiles have started to peel up now.

The thing that bothers me the most though is the bath; it looks so scruffy and really needs replacing, so I would love to replace the whole thing and get a new bath. I would love a nice big tub that I can relax in and it would look so much better too.

Ideally, we would start again completely and do a whole bathroom remodel but it’s hard to know whether it would be worth spending the money to do that, especially as it’s such a small space. Checking out homecarecontractors.com/bathroom-remodel/ helped me figure out whether it is suitable for our house or not.

Replace the kitchen floor

A couple of years ago our new washing machine leaked badly because it hadn’t been fitted properly and it really wrecked our kitchen floor and made it really warped, which left gaps between the boards and looks a mess. We still haven’t got around to replacing it and it really annoys me. We have the same flooring in our dining room so ideally, I would like to get some Engineered Wood Flooring throughout all of the kitchen and dining area which would make it look so much better. I love how wood flooring looks and it’s so practical too.

Put up some art

We don’t have many pictures up and I would really like to add some art to the walls to inject some personality and brightness into some of the rooms, with things I love looking at. I actually have a big, bright picture coming which I think will look great in the dining room and really brighten up the white walls. We’ve also had another big piece of art that we just got from Ikea – oooh – a couple of years ago (maybe more!) that we’ve never got round to putting that up, so we must get on that too. My excuse for this one is that I never know where the bloody drill is (I think it is probably buried under the messy pit known as the-cupboard-under-the-stairs).

I also feel like I just want my house to be more fun and maybe a bit quirky in a non-ridiculous way if that makes any sense? I want fun art, I want weird and wonderful but not bloody hideous and ugly. I want this weird flower-pot head (not pothead, you understand) and this velvet cuddler sofa — although you may think they are, in fact, ugly. But I love them. I’m bored of the walls of my house being pale and uninteresting and so hopefully over the next year or so something will be done about it!

Is your house always a work-in-progress or do you have it all exactly how you want it?
