The first thing to consider when introducing an indoor herb garden to your home is where you’re going to place it. It’s really important for your herb garden to have plenty of sunlight, as this will help them grow to their full potential. Herbs grown in a strong light will have a much better flavour, which is exactly what you want when it comes to using them in your cooking. This particular stage in your indoor herb garden creation is the most important, as if you place them somewhere that is too dark or sheltered, you won’t see the best results from your herb plants.

Next you need to think about the temperature that your herb garden is exposed to. For herbs plants to grow properly (and well) you need to ensure the temperature is between 60 and 70 degrees at all times. If the room is too cold or too hot, you’ll find that your herb plants will slowly wither and potentially have stunted growth. Remember to be cautious when it comes to placing your plants in the room, as you want your mini indoor herb garden to have plenty of exposure to the sunlight, yet you don’t want the leaves to burn from touching any surfaces or too much heat.

In order for your herb garden to grow healthy and strong, you need to ensure that you’re planting your seeds in the right pots. It may seem like choosing the pots for your herb garden is a straight forward choice, but there’s a little bit more to it than people often think. You need to take the following things into consideration:

Drainage – Does the pot have enough room for the water to drain properly, allowing your plants to feed without drowning? Your chosen pots need to have drainage holes positioned at the bottom of the pot to allow the water to filter out, giving the soil room to breathe and enabling the seeds to grow. If you don’t have any drainage holes, you may find that your herb plants stop growing due to too much water soaked into the soil.

Height – You want your plant pots to be relatively small, as you only need small amounts of soil to keep them healthy. If you put them into a pot that is too large, they may struggle to grow properly out from the soil and you may find your herb garden never really takes off properly.

Dishes – Having the right kind of dish underneath your plant pot will help to keep the area neat and tidy when the pot starts to drain. If you forget to position a pot underneath your herb garden, you’ll find that the water will slowly leak over your windowsill or surface and cause quite a mess!

Labelling your herb garden is another extremely important step. Whilst certain herbs such as mint and basil will be obvious due to their smell, you’ll find it difficult to differentiate the other herbs if you fail to label them accordingly. Using your permanent marker, write a neat label on each plant pot to show which herb is growing there. This will make your life much easier when it comes to picking the herbs for your cooking.
