There are many costs to owning a pet from vet bills to grooming. A cost that can often add up without many of us realising is pet supplies such as food and toys. This could be particularly the case when looking after a rare pet or rare breed with specific needs. Fortunately, there are many ways to save money on pet supplies without sacrificing the quality of care that you provide to your pet. Here are just a few ways to make supplies cheaper.

Shop online

You can often save money on pet supplies when shopping online. This is particularly the case with more niche items such as reptile supplies – your local pet store may only have limited options when it comes to brands while shopping online allows you to compare various brands.

Always buy supplies from trusted sellers. There are lots of animal food and toys online that haven’t been officially tested and approved, and these can be dangerous for your pet. So, before buying, always read reviews and dog food warnings as this can help you to determine whether they are safe for your furry friend or not. Once done, also look out for certificates to check whether a product should be trusted. From here, you will be able to make an informed decision about what to buy.

Buy food in bulk

In many cases, you can save money on pet food by buying it in bulk. Many pet retailers offer multi-buy discounts as well as larger portion packs in which you’re likely to proportionally more food for your money.

Just be careful of expiry dates when bulk buying – while some canned foods can last years before going off, others may go off within a couple of weeks, which could mean that you never get around to opening them.

Shop for cages and tanks second-hand

When it comes to rodent cages, aquariums and vivariums, you may be able to save a lot of money by buying a used one online. Local selling sites are some of the best options as they allow you to fully inspect the condition before buying. You may find some discounted cages and tanks that have barely been used.

Make use of subscription deals and loyalty discounts

Some pet suppliers offer subscription deals on food while others allow you to collect loyalty points which you can spend on free supplies. These are great ways to save money on supplies – particularly if you have multiple pets and are constantly buying new supplies.

Make your own toys

There may be pet toys that you can make yourself from household items. For instance, did you know that you can make a dog tug toy out of old t-shirts? You can also use cardboard toilet roll tubes and old cereal packets as boredom breakers for small rodents.

Make your own treats

When it comes to pet treats, there are also plenty of homemade options that can save you money rather than buying bags of manufactured treats. Homemade liver cake can be cut up into tiny pieces and frozen, making an excellent treat for dogs that is fairly nutritious.
