How to Help Your Kids Find the Ideal University

15th June 2022

Watching your children grow older is a time of transition for the whole family. As they get to the age when they’re about to leave school and take their first steps into adulthood, they will become more independent and will need to take control of their own lives.

However, before your children fully enter adult life, they will still need your help. Hopefully, most teenagers at this stage will already have an idea of what they want to do with their lives. If their dream career involves going to university, then it’s up to you to help them find the right one.

Career Opportunities

The first and potentially most important thing to consider when picking out a university is to consider the kind of career that the potential student wants to go into. They don’t necessarily have to have a specific job lined up, as long as they know their preferred industry so that they can choose an appropriate field of study.

Different universities specialise in different subjects. For example, if someone wants to become a doctor, then they will have to go to a medical school. This narrows the field considerably as not every university offers the same curriculum.

As well as ensuring that the university even offers the necessary course, it’s also beneficial to check the quality of the courses on offer. A university with a fantastic art department might not be great for STEM studies, even if it offers those options. Read student reviews and do your research.

You should also look into what university services are available in your shortlisted universities. These can greatly impact the student experience.

Local or International

The UK has some of the best universities in the world, but your options don’t have to end there. Some students decide to go to a university in a different country. Sometimes that university has a great reputation in a specific subject area, or perhaps they simply want to experience life in another country.

Another reason to choose a university in another country is if the student plans to move to that country and needs a specific qualification that can only be acquired there. For example, nurses in the UK undergo different training than nurses in the US, which means that they would have to retrain for their license to practice.

Making the move to another country is a big jump for anyone, especially a young student. You’ll need to do your research beforehand and provide any needed support.

Prestigious Universities

If your child has their eye on one of the more prestigious universities, such as Oxford or Cambridge, then they have their work cut out for them.

Along with excellent grades and a stellar reputation, it’s beneficial for students to provide a great personal statement to explain their experiences and to improve their chances of getting accepted into the university. The good news is that your child can use a personal statement service to help them stand out from the crowd.
