How to Encourage Your Staff Members to Take Care of Their Wellbeing
As a business owner you have a duty of care for your employees to make sure they’re happy and well cared for when they are in your company. Some employees do the basics, but if you want to take it one step further, there are many things you can do to help optimise their health and well-being when at work.
Research has shown that the healthier employees are, the more willing they are to come into work and the better results they produce too, so it really is a win-win situation. In this article, we take a look at some top tips on how you can encourage your staff members to take care of their well-being. Keep on reading to find out more.

Incentivise them to walk or cycle to work
One of the simplest ways to get your staff members to be more healthy is to encourage them to walk or cycle to work. You could offer a scheme where you subsidise bikes, or offer bonuses to those that get to work by foot or bike. Get some bike shelters so they can keep their bikes secure and away from harm and think about sending out newsletters which highlight the benefits of walking or cycling to work as opposed to driving and getting the bus. You can also mention the environmental impact too!
Provide free healthy food and drinks
Put aside a little budget each month to invest in some healthy food and drink for the staff. This could be as simple as some fresh fruit and herbal teas or different flavored waters which are readily available in the kitchen. Once a week you could provide free soup or salad for everyone for lunch and leave the recipes out for them to re-make at home. This is a nice way to bring everyone together as well as encourage them to eat healthily instead of grabbing a shop-bought sandwich or fast food.
Offer mental health support
Mental health is a real focus in today’s world, and with pressures at work and home being the highest they have ever been, it’s no surprise more support is needed. You should offer access to mental health support, giving people time off if they need to go to counselling and regularly checking in how everyone’s mental health and wellbeing is. You could email round resources and allow compassionate leave if someone is really struggling. Knowing they have the support of their boss can make a real difference to how they feel.
These are just a few things you can do that can encourage your staff members to take care of their wellbeing and better themselves in the workplace. As an employer, helping your employees can show how much you care as a boss, incentivize them to do better and improve the morale of the office.
