How to Create a Biophilic Living Space

6th February 2024

Nature has the power to inspire peace, which is the perfect atmosphere for your home. Transform your interiors into a tranquil oasis by bringing the outdoors indoors – both literally and figuratively. Here are four ways to create a biophilic living space that harnesses nature’s ability to soothe

Add floral patterns

An easy way to echo the outside world is to add floral patterns to your interiors. These range from regimented rows of leaves in subtle shades to an irregular print of multi-coloured flowers in various shapes and sizes.

Use floral patterns as accents in your overall design scheme to avoid them overwhelming the room. Try incorporating them in your decorative elements, such as choosing a table lamp with a floral shade or adding cushions patterned with leaves to your sofa and chairs.

Adjust your colour palette

If you want to introduce nature in a less literal way, adjust your colour palette to pick up the hues you find outdoors. Think the blue of the sky and sea, the various greens of grass and trees, and the rich reds and browns of the earth. You can also use yellow and gold to recall sunshine and sand.

Again, don’t let one colour dominate the space. Soften the look with different shades, and keep a classic white, cream or neutral background as the foundation for your room.

Use natural materials

There are endless ways that you can use natural materials in your interiors.

In your living room, consider running marble or dark grey granite around the fireplace for a subtle yet statement-making touch of luxury. You could also create a basin and fill it with pebbles that range from charcoal to duck egg for added texture, interest and colour.

In terms of your furniture, utilise wood with natural grains that will pair perfectly with veined marble. For a more rustic look, add woven wicker baskets and chairs and keep your wooden furniture unvarnished.

For the floors, wood again works well, or you can mimic the idea of having the earth beneath your feet by adding terracotta tiles or carpet in a soft mushroom brown shade.

Introduce plants

Last but certainly not least, you must introduce plants to create a truly biophilic living space. Having real plants in the room will increase the oxygen levels to improve your physical health while bolstering your mental wellness.

The best houseplants for your health include spider plants, peace lilies and snake plants, all of which detoxify the air to remove pollutants. You could also look into investing in impactful larger houseplants to make the greenery a central part of your décor. Popular options include monstera, also known as the cheese plant, and the charmingly named fiddle-leaf fig.

Remember to choose plants that have needs that suit your property and are not too demanding for your lifestyle.
