Every decade comes with its own distinct hairstyles. The 2010s have had their fair share of hairstyle fads. If you’ve been thinking of changing your hairstyle and want something cool and current, these hairstyles could be worth considering.

Women’s hairstyles

The French braid

The French braid has been around for centuries but has recently spiked in popularity, perhaps somewhat due to The Hunger Games’ main protagonist Katniss Everdeen sporting this very hairstyle. Everyone from Rita Ora to Kylie Jenner to Olivia Munn has been embracing the French braid this decade. In its simplest form, it involves collecting strands of hair into three braids and then twisting these braids around one another. You can create one single braided ponytail or multiple braided ponytails. It’s a product-free look that can work in any setting.

The side shave

The side shave is a more radical haircut – it involves shaving the head on one side around the ear and keeping the rest long. Once a fairly rebellious haircut, it has now become fairly mainstream. Celebrities who have embraced the side shave include Rihanna, Natalie Dormer and Demi Lovato. Some people go so far as to shave half of their entire head whilst others keep to a subtler shave around the ear. To maintain this look, make sure that you’re regularly trimming the shaved part.

The pixie cut

The pixie cut became popular in the 90s when the likes of Halle Berry and Winona Ryder flaunted it. This decade has seen a big revival in women trimming their hair short for a more daringly boyish look – some big names that have sported this cut include Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Cate Blanchett. Pixie cuts have the advantage of being low maintenance and can help to highlight the shape of your face. You can even play with mousses and gels to add more interesting shaping.

The ombre beach wave

For the ultimate mermaid look, opt for beach waves. This stylish hairstyle consists of straight long hair with wavy tips. Adding an ombre effect to these beach waves has become a popular trend in recent years – this involves slowly fading one colour into another. This could involve fading brunette into blonde or it could involve more adventurous colours like red, blue and green. There are ombre sprays and hairdryer diffusers that can help to achieve this style. Everyone from Kim Kardashian to Lily Allen has embraced this look.

Yarn dreads

One of the more striking looks of this decade is yarn dreads. These dreadlocks involve using yarn rather than your natural hair – it’s essentially faking it, but it’s also much healthier for your hair and offers more versatile options. You can experiment with different colours and length and play with wild styles such as dread buns and dread mohawks. Good quality yarn will achieve a more lasting look. The likes of Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Willow Smith have all embraced yarn dreads this decade.

Men’s hairstyles

The undercut

The undercut has been sweeping the world this decade with men of all ages embracing it. Footballers David Beckham and Christiano Ronaldo are some of the most famous people to don this haircut, whilst actors such as Brad Pitt and singers such as Justin Timberlake have also embraced the trend. Undercuts generally involve shaving the head above the ears slightly and then keeping it a little longer on top. However, it’s possible to go very long on top. You can even play with patterning on the shaved sides of the head for a more playful look.

The quiff

This iconic fifties haircut, characterised by shaping the fringe upwards, is a timeless hairstyle. However, this decade has seen it really spiking in popularity. There are multiple styles of quiff including the messy look as sported by Robert Pattinson and the neater look as sported by Justin Bieber which incorporates an undercut. Even women have been embracing this look including the likes of Pink and Ruby Rose. Pomades are great for achieving the old-school pompadour look, whilst creams can add a more modern shine. Combing it in can help it to stay in place and add texture.

Wings haircut

This shaggy look has also been around for a long time. Harry Styles’ adoption of the hairstyle is perhaps the most famous example and has encouraged lots of young men wanting a longer haircut to embrace it. This haircut is fairly low maintenance and ideal for people with wavy hair, although does need the occasional tidying to stop it becoming too scruffy. Volumising hair products can help to maintain it.

The man bun

This polarising hairstyle made a big impact this decade. Done correctly as by the likes of Orlando Bloom and Chris Hemsworth, this hairstyle can be effective. It’s also a practical hairstyle for anyone with long hair, keeping it out of the face. There are varying styles of manbun including the backward facing samurai knot and the top knot on top of the head. Depending on your hair’s length you can also go for a semi-bun or a full ponytail bun. You should use an elastic band to keep it in place and use leave-in conditioner to help give it volume.

Hi-top fades

The hi-top fade was all the rage back in the 80s and 90s with the likes of Will Smith making it popular. This haircut is much like the undercut but involves a more gradual fade with a more squared-off appearance. It’s recently made a comeback with the likes of Iman Shumpert sporting it. There are different degrees of hi-top fade including the extreme flat top and the more gradual fade.
