CICA UK – How Long Does a CICA Claim Take?

11th October 2019

Making an abuse compensation claim can be stressful for an abuse victim, no matter what type of abuse it was or how much time has passed since the final incident. Abuse often has long-term negative effects on the victim and their quality of life, whether the damage to their well-being is physical or psychological. The more severe the injury, the higher the amount of compensation the victim could receive if they make a claim. However, it is understandable that victims won’t want to go through a drawn-out process to make a compensation claim.

CICA Claim Calculator

Before going to the effort of filling out an application form and submitting it to the Criminal Injury Compensation Authority, victims of abuse could calculate the compensation they are likely to be entitled to themselves. You can do this by using a CICA claim calculator online, checking the compensation amounts for the CICA scheme on the government website, or consulting with a solicitor who can assess whether you have a valid claim for compensation under the criminal injuries compensation tariff. If you are definitely eligible, then submit your claim and the CICA will review it. They should keep in touch with updates about your case.

CICA Claim Waiting Time

Most CICA claims have a waiting time of around 2 months before the claimant receives a decision from the CICA. For more complex cases, it could take several months to a year for the CICA to reach a decision. The CICA might contact you or your solicitor if you have one to request further evidence to support your compensation claim. If you have to pay to acquire medical reports or psychiatric diagnoses then the CICA should reimburse you for the costs. The higher the value of the claim, the longer it is likely to take for the CICA to make a final decision about the compensation award. It will also take longer if the claim refers to injuries which the victim is currently receiving treatment for, or if there are criminal proceedings for this abuse case which are still ongoing. When the CICA reaches a decision on your claim, they will send a letter to you to notify you whether your claim was successful and how much money you can claim. You must write back to claim the compensation award, and then the CICA will transfer it to your bank account within 4 weeks of your acceptance of the award.
