If you can identify the way that your child processes information, you will then discover the best tools and activities to boost your child’s learning. It can be useful for parents and carers to identify their own learning styles too, as this will have an impact on how you teach.

To help you identify your child’s individual learning style and discover their most successful educational methods, an independent school in Surrey have provided the following advice…

The three main learning styles are visual, kinaesthetic and auditory and each learning style relates to the senses that your child uses most when learning. 

Visual learner

Visual learners like to see what they are learning. They enjoy looking at books and like to have instructions demonstrated to them or presented in a diagram. They are usually very good at remembering things that they have seen – have a photographic memory.

When teaching visual learners it is a good idea to have a pen and paper ready, as they may like to draw or take notes as they learn.

Kinaesthetic learner

Kinaesthetic learners learn best through hands-on activities. These children usually like to touch and feel as they learn and they also enjoy learning through movement. You may notice that this type of leaner will often use hand movements to describe things.

Kinaesthetic learners often enjoy subjects such as Drama, PE and Art, where there are a lot of physical activities to keep them engaged.

Auditory learner

This type of learner absorbs information most effectively by listening. They are also more likely to remember key details by repeating certain words out loud.

Auditory learners like to have things verbally explained and they enjoy open discussion groups. Auditory learners may appear as if they are not paying attention, but don’t let this worry you, they are actually busy processing the information they have listened to!
