5 Important Life Skills to Explore with Your Child

16th May 2022

Children should be directed to the biggest life skills they can value from. There are many life skills you can teach your child which will help them with their general development. In this guide from a private secondary school in London, we look at 5 important life skills you should be teaching your child.

1 – Kindness

Being kind is a given – you will only receive what you deliver after all. If you have a rude child, expect people to be rude back to them in retaliation. This can be alleviated through teaching your child to be kind, honest and dedicated to what they’re learning. It can take a while for a child to develop their thoughts and feelings, so slowly nurture their skills as they grow.

2 – Resilience

Being brave in front of others can be both a hindrance and a blessing, depending on how your child handles being resilient. It’s a good exercise to teach your child that allows them to handle adversity and problem-solving skills, as well as picking up those more stressful tasks.

3 – Honesty

Being able to tell the truth is important. A child that’s keen to tell lies is more likely to cause bad behaviour in the classroom and can lead to damaged relationships. Show your child from a young age why telling the truth causes fewer headaches.

4 – Respect

This is something children will likely learn in tandem with their understanding of kindness and honesty. Being respectful allows children to be heard and can be on the same level as their peers in school, as well as their parents.

5 – Manners

All children will and should be taught manners. They’re essential to a child’s general development and will allow them to engage in more developed conversations with adults. It’s all part of why children are more likely to be better behaved if they understand the importance of manners. And it’s more than just saying yes please and thank you!
