San Diego is known as one of the most beautiful cities on the West Coast, and it’s easy to see why. Sandy beaches welcome visitors and locals alike to enjoy seaside relaxation while blue waves beckon locals to grab the nearest surfboard.
There is no shortage of relaxing things to do in San Diego, but the ocean remains one of the main attractions. In addition to surfing, you can swim, sail, or enjoy a stroll down the boardwalk. If you’re interested in seeing the most scenic heights in the city — including some incredible ocean views — you definitely won’t want to miss these five top scenic overlooks in San Diego.
One of the best hikes San Diego offers is through the trails located in the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. This park is located in La Jolla and offers several separate overlook spots, including the first entry on the list: the Yucca Point Overlook. It’s situated in the midst of stunning natural topography with a beautiful view of the ocean right ahead. The hike is suited to all ages and skill levels, so you can endeavour with confidence.
If you’re interested in getting a glimpse of the marine life that populates the ocean, your best bet is Whale Overlook in the Cabrillo National Monument. The overlook is mostly flat and it’s also wheelchair accessible, making it a great location for anybody and everybody to enjoy impressive views. Even if a view of the whales eludes you, you’ll appreciate the stunning natural scenery.
The third notable overlook in San Diego is none other than the High Point Overlook. This spot is located in La Jolla, and it’s accessible through hiking trails located in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. This overlook is most notable for the 360-degree vantage point it offers of the surrounding park and the panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. Visitors also often enjoy the workout required to access the overlook — you’ll be doing a lot of uphill walking!
Anybody who’s interested in finding an overlook to watch the sunset will enjoy San Diego’s Sunset Cliffs, located adjacent to Point Loma. The park trail leads to the fourth amazing overlook, where you’ll find an expansive view of the ocean — and yes, as the name suggests, the sunset and the cliffs. It’s also a spectacular spot for watching the sunrise if you’re more of an early bird. It’s also a great spot to watch sailing tours in San Diego pass by.
The fifth and final overlook to check out is the Miramar Overlook. This overlook is different from every other entry on this list because it offers a view of a lake rather than the ocean. Don’t let that dissuade you though — the Miramar Reserve Lake might be just as beautiful as the Pacific Ocean. Other attractions at this overlook include two nearby playgrounds for the kids, quaint gazebos for relaxation, and benches and tables for a midday picnic.
