What to Remember When Choosing a New Sofa for a New Home

7th May 2021

The property market is red hot at the moment. So many people are moving into new homes, and with this looking for new furniture. One of the most important pieces of furniture for any home is the sofa. For many of us, this is where we spend most of our time relaxing and socialising, so choosing the right new sofa for a new home is a big decision.

As with any piece of furniture, the ultimate decision needs to come down to your personal taste, so nobody can tell you what you should or shouldn’t buy, but there is always helpful information and tips you can pick up from others. Today we have teamed up with Robinson of England, who specialise in handmade Chesterfield sofas, to help share some things we should all remember when choosing a new sofa for a new home.

Keep size in mind

When choosing furniture, it’s always vital to keep the size in mind. This is particularly important when moving into a new home where the room dimensions are likely different to what you’re used to. Taking the time to measure your new living room and determine where your existing furniture, such as tables, cabinets, and your TV will go, will allow you to work out how much space you have available for your new sofa. The last thing you want is to order a new sofa and come delivery day into your new home realise that it takes up too much space and your living room feels cramped.

Neutral colours can be better for new homes

You rarely move into a new home, and there be no changes you want to make, even to something as simple as the wall colour. It may be a case that you’re happy to live with the colours on the walls as they are when you move in to start with, but that in time it’s something you want to change. Because of this, it’s important to keep in mind how a new sofa would look with the existing wall colour and any other colours you may change them to in the future. Choosing a neutral colour for your new sofa can avoid any problematic colour contrasts in the future should you change the colour of your living room walls.

Think about your existing furniture

In the same way you need to think about your existing furniture when it comes to choosing a sofa size, how a new sofa will look alongside your existing furniture is also worth considering. Your existing furniture style can help guide you in selecting a sofa that will work well in your new home.

Be smart with the cost

Moving homes is one of the most expensive things you will do in your life, and so spending a lot of money on a new sofa during or just after this process isn’t going to be an option for many of us. There are two key things to remember with this. Firstly, many furniture or department stores have a credit agreement system in place that will allow you to pay a deposit and then monthly payments over a period of time. In some situations, this can be a more financially viable way of purchasing something large like a new sofa.

Secondly, there are several times during the year when big sales take place on furniture. It’s worth staying up to date with your local furniture and department stores so that you do not miss these sales. Signing up for email reminders of events can be a good way to keep track of when a sale is happening.

One of the most important things to remember when choosing a new sofa is that this should be an exciting and enjoyable time! You’re moving into a new home and getting some new furniture, both of which you will hopefully love for years to come. While it can be stressful at times, try and focus on the positives and enjoy the process.
