Want to Clear Clutter? Here are the Biggest Areas to Tackle First
If you have a lot of clutter around the home, you may be unsure where to start. A good way to navigate this is to identify the areas around your home that are the worst for clutter, and then you can make sure that you’re making solid progress.

Under the Sink
If you know that the cupboard under your sink is just full of cleaning products and dusters, and you feel as though you need to have a good sort through everything, but have no idea where to start, then start by getting out the items you use regularly, and make sure that you are aware of the ones you never really use. If these are brand new or recently opened items, then you could offer them to neighbours or family. Keep in mind that even cleaning products have an expiry date, so you need to check them to avoid keeping items that are no longer usable or safe to use.
Under the Stairs
Many people have at least one cupboard in the home that is brimming with clutter. It may be hidden under your stairs or spilling out of your hallway cupboard. Either way, sorting these out can be a bit of a chore, and if you want to help yourself, you need to set aside a few days to tackle it.
Ideally, you should remove everything so you can utilise storage solutions to make the most out of what you have and make it more accessible.
Sort everything into piles to keep, donate, or throw. Remove any duplicates, fold down any tote bags to fit them in a smaller bag and store them neatly in the cupboard. Shelves, baskets, and containers can also be used to keep your space organised, and then junk hauling services can take away anything too big.
Under the Bed
Lastly, another significant space you probably need to deal with is under the bed. Pull everything out and then give the floor a good vacuum. Once you have done this, you can then use transparent containers to store things and keep everything organised. This will also protect your clothing from moths. If you run out of room at home, using self-storage can also be a practical option for keeping seasonal or rarely used items safely out of the way. You can also store out-of-season clothing in suitcases in the attic to reduce clutter. To make things easier for yourself later on, label what you can so that you can find exactly what you are looking for.
Clearing clutter can feel overwhelming at first, but starting with the worst spots in your home – like under the sink, the stairs, and the bed – helps you see progress quickly and stay motivated. Once you’ve tackled these areas, you’ll not only free up valuable space but also create a calmer, more organised home that’s easier to maintain. Remember, decluttering doesn’t have to be done all at once; small, consistent efforts can make a big difference over time.
