Skiathos, with its golden beaches, lush landscapes, and welcoming atmosphere, is the perfect destination for a family holiday. It’s a small but vibrant gem among the Greek islands, offering plenty of activities that will keep both children and parents entertained.
Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or cultural experiences, here’s everything you need to know about travelling to Skiathos with kids.
Why Choose Skiathos for a Family Holiday?
Skiathos in Greece is a fantastic family-friendly destination due to its compact size, safe environment, and abundance of outdoor activities suitable for all ages. The island’s shallow waters, soft sandy beaches, and relaxed Greek hospitality make it an excellent choice for families with young children.
With direct flights from the UK to Skiathos Airport, the journey is convenient, at less than 4 hours from East Midlands, and once there, you’ll find everything within walking distance or a short walk away. Whether you’re based near the lively Skiathos Port or near one of the quieter southern beaches, everything is easy to reach and well-connected.
Best Beaches for Families
One of the highlights of Skiathos is its stunning southern coast, with over 60 beaches to choose from. Here are some of the best places for families.
Koukounaries Beach
Famous for its soft sand and shallow, crystal-clear waters, this beach is ideal for small children. Parents will appreciate the sunbeds, nearby cafes, and water sports facilities for older children. Plus, there’s a shady pine forest behind the beach for when you need a break from the sun.
A lifeguard is often on duty during the summer months, and there are plenty of facilities such as changing rooms, showers, and snack bars, making it easy to spend the whole day here.
It’s easy to get to on the bus, which goes right from Skiathos Town to Koukounaries beach and back at regular times during the summer season. We spent a lovely day here, enjoying swimming in the clear water (which was very cold in early May!) and having lunch at one of the Tavernas.
Lalaria Beach
Accessible only by boat, Lalaria is one of Skiathos’ most iconic and photogenic spots. With its dramatic white cliffs, striking natural arch, and smooth white pebbles, it offers a truly unique beach experience.
Though not suitable for very small children due to the rocky shore and waves, it’s a breathtaking destination for families with older children looking for an adventure. Don’t forget your camera – this is a perfect place for family holiday snaps!
Mandraki Beach
Located on the north coast and surrounded by pine forests, Mandraki is a more secluded and peaceful option. The walk to the beach (a beautiful 20–30 minute walk through shaded woodland paths) is an adventure in itself, especially for curious kids.
The beach is sandy, quiet, and ideal for families wanting to escape the crowds, making it one of the best places to experience the island’s unspoiled natural beauty.
We absolutely loved this beach, and when we were there early in May, there were never more than six other people on it! The water was beautifully clear, and the little shack was great for drinks and snacks, and to sit and escape from the sun for a bit.
Agia Paraskevi Beach
A spacious and well-organised beach with calm waters and plenty of shade, just minutes’ walk from many hotels and restaurants. It’s a great base for a full day by the sea, especially for families staying nearby.
The beach is sandy and clean, with beach bars and tavernas offering snacks and full meals, plus water sports for older kids and loungers for parents to relax.
Vasilias Beach
A quieter option that’s great for families who prefer a more low-key beach experience. The gentle waves make it ideal for paddling and sandcastle building. It’s often less crowded than the larger beaches, and several hotels and apartments nearby offer direct beach access, making it easy to pop back for naps or snacks. There are also a few excellent tavernas serving fresh seafood just steps from the shore.
Megali Ammos Beach
Located close to the main road and Skiathos Port, this beach offers convenience, a wide selection of tavernas, and safe swimming areas. It’s perfect for families staying in or near Skiathos Town.
With calm water, sunbeds, and places to rent paddleboards, it’s a fun and easy option for a relaxing beach day, especially if you’re travelling without a car.
Fun Activities for Kids in Skiathos
Aside from the beautiful beaches, Skiathos has plenty of fun-filled options that will keep the whole family entertained.
1. Boat Trips Around the Island
A boat trip is one of the best things to do in Skiathos. Whether you’re hopping on a guided cruise or catching a water taxi from the Old Port of Skiathos, the views are spectacular.
Many excursions include stops at hidden coves, the iconic Lalaria Beach with its striking white cliffs, and nearby islands like Skopelos and Alonissos – famous as filming locations for Mamma Mia!. Kids love jumping off the boat into the Aegean Sea and snorkelling in the clear water.
2. Visit the Skiathos Open-Air Cinema
For a magical evening, take the kids to the Open-Air Cinema in the old part of Skiathos Town. Surrounded by traditional houses and twinkling lights, it’s an unforgettable experience. They often show family-friendly films, including Mamma Mia!, making it a perfect wind-down activity after a beach day.
3. Volunteer Dog Walking at the Skiathos Dog Shelter
For a heartwarming and memorable experience, consider visiting the Skiathos Dog Shelter. Families are welcome to walk the dogs, giving the animals some much-needed exercise and affection while enjoying the peaceful forested surroundings.
It’s a great opportunity to teach children about compassion and animal welfare, and it’s something many visitors describe as a holiday highlight. Just bring water, wear sturdy shoes, and check opening hours in advance via their Facebook page or website.
We did this twice whilst we were there, and it was definitely a highlight for all of us. We got to walk puppies and lots of other gorgeous dogs, and we wanted to take them all home with us. The volunteers do wonderful things for these beautiful animals, and it’s lovely hearing about some of the dogs getting rehomed.
4. Explore the Old Town
Wander through the charming streets of Skiathos Old Town, where kids can enjoy ice cream from local parlours, browse souvenir shops, and watch the boats come and go from the harbour.
Don’t miss a visit to Agios Nikolaos Church and the small fortress beside it. From here, you’ll get panoramic views of the town and sea, as well as a look at the picturesque clock tower perched above the old port.

5. Discover Evangelistria Monastery
For a touch of history and culture, visit Evangelistria Monastery, set in the hills above the island. The peaceful setting, beautiful views, and interesting exhibits (including one about the first Greek flag) make it a perfect place for a quiet family outing. It’s also a nice spot for a gentle walk and a chance to learn more about the island’s heritage.
6. Water Sports and Outdoor Fun
Older children and teens will love the range of water sports available on the island. From paddleboarding and kayaking to banana boat rides and windsurfing, there’s something for every age and confidence level.
Many beaches offer equipment hire and beginner-friendly instruction. Inland, there are also opportunities for light hiking or nature walks, offering a glimpse into the island’s unspoiled landscapes and natural beauty.

Accommodation on Skiathos caters well to families. Look for a friendly hotel like Skiathos Princess Hotel or Elivi Skiathos, known for its family suites with separate rooms, a small pool for young children, and a larger outdoor swimming pool for everyone to enjoy. Many resorts and self-catering apartments are located within walking distance of beaches, bus stops, and local shops, making them a great choice for convenience and comfort.
Other family accommodation highlights include shaded gardens, playgrounds, and easy access to the main road for exploring. Booking early during the summer months is recommended, especially for places close to Skiathos Port or Koukounaries Beach.
We stayed in apartments that are perfect for adults or families with older children – Areti Apartments. The apartments are simple but large and clean, with beautiful views of the sea. The brother and sister who run it are wonderful, and the pool and bar area are stunning. We’ll definitely be back.
