Winter Refashion Project: Tips to Take Care of Your Winter Closet

12th October 2021

“The best part about winter is that you’ll finally get to wear your favourite hoodies and coats, which have been sitting in your closet for months.” -Kyle MacLachlan.

It’s officially the time to say goodbye to summer and bring out your cosy coats and sweaters. It also means, now is the time for you to wake up your inner fashionista and try unique ways to repurpose your winter closet.

And why not?

Winter clothes are pretty expensive. So if you get an opportunity to wear your old clothes (especially coats and shoes) like they are brand new, you’re surely not going to miss out on them. Don’t you agree?

But before you upcycle your clothes, you need to separate your wardrobe into two piles:

Pile 1: The clothes which are in good condition and require a wash.

Pile 2: The clothes which are torn or damaged in any way.

After you have created the piles, your refashion projects begin!

For Pile 1

As these clothes are still in good condition, you need to add some life to them. Here’s how:

Plus, dry cleaning will prolong the life of your favourite outfits so it is definitely worthwhile.

Also, keep your outdoor clothes beside your everyday wear. It will ensure that you can grab them easily when the season becomes colder.

For Pile 2

You don’t have to throw away your old clothes because they are torn or damaged. Instead, you can upcycle them to create a whole new outfit. It will help in reducing wastage. Plus, your wardrobe will be elevated! Here’s how:

The first idea to refashion your old sweaters is to turn them into a dress. How? Well, all you need is two sweaters, preferably one in oversize. Cut both sweaters horizontally. However, make sure that one sweater is shorter than the other.

When you have all the pieces, you just need to sew them interchangeably. That means, sew the upper part of one sweater with the lower (and longer) part of the other sweater. This way, you’ll have a new sweater dress which is not only unique but is also very comfortable to wear.

You can pair the dress with thigh-high boots and an overcoat to complete the look. It will ensure that you stay warm yet look sassy.

Another way to revamp your hoodies and sweaters is to add details to them. For instance, if there are holes in your hoodies, you can cover them using buttons. It will add fine detailing to your hoodies and also make them stand out.

Likewise, you can create a heart shape in the middle of a plain sweater using pom-poms. This will give your old outfit a new lease of life.

You can also add front pockets to your outfit to keep your hands warm during the colder seasons. For this, you can use any of your old sweatshirts which already have pockets.

Tip: If you don’t know how to sew, you can use fabric glue or a glue gun to paste the buttons, pom-poms, or pockets.

You can turn any sweater into a cute cardigan in less than 5 minutes. All you need to do is cut the front of your sweater from the middle “vertically.” After that, you can sew some funky buttons on one side and create thread chain loops on the other side. Make sure the loops and buttons align.

If you don’t want buttons, you can sew a zipper instead. This way, if you feel cold, you can close the zipper to keep yourself warm.

You can also use fabric paint to create some designs over the cardigan.

It is essential to keep your head warm during winters. It reduces the chances of getting sick and also keeps your entire body warm.

Taking that into consideration, if you have a really old sweater or hoodie, you can create a beanie using it. Just use the bottom part of the hoodie (which has elastic) and cut it into a U shape. After that, you’ll have two pieces; sew all the sides together except for one part for the opening.

And there you have it!

To elevate the look of your beanie, you can add a big pom-pom over the top of it. Or you can also use small crystal stones to make the beanie look more appealing.

Refashion projects are a great way to help save the environment and use your outfits in a unique way. Not to mention, you’ll create a whole new wardrobe without purchasing anything new. So, give the ideas mentioned above a try and take care of your winter closet.
