Auschwitz Birkenau (Poland)

This camp is one of the most notorious places of mass murder and terror during the Second World War and the heart of the Nazi ‘Final Solution’. It was the final step of their plan for the mass extermination of the Jewish race. The camp that still stands today, serves as a cold reminder of the depths that humanity has fallen to in the past. Most of the camp still stands today, with two campsites standing, the Auschwitz Camp One, and the Auschwitz Birkenau camp, which is the largest. Many of the wooden structures of which the campmates were houses are mostly burned down after the Nazis tried to destroy parts of the camp and destroy evidence of their crimes.

The crematoriums of which many of the victims of the regime were cremated were blown up in another attempt at covering up their crimes, but the pits and the ruins of these buildings are still visible and intact to this day, with many of the camp buildings. You get to the camps with various modes of travel such as bus, coach, car, and taxi. When you arrive, you can elect to have an Auschwitz tour from Krakow Airport, which is the closest airport to the camps. So, try and make it sometime in your life to go and visit this living artefact, as many in the future will not be able to have this luxury!

Ground Zero, World Trade Centre (New York)

The events that happened on the 9th of September, 2001 resonated with people around the world, even decades later people are still talking about the attacks on the World Trade Centre. Of course, the Twin Towers themselves are no longer here to witness which is a tragedy in itself. But the surrounding areas are still littered with the original buildings that surrounded the iconic architectural masterpieces.

World Trade Centre Two, Three, Four Five are still standing today, and previously damaged buildings have all been restored back to their former glory. Also, One World Trade Centre has been reincarnated in the shining new Freedom Tower. Along with these, there is a brand new shopping complex that has been applauded for its ergonomic and clever architectural design. The entire plaza has been rebuild and raised, with a modern 9/11 museum concealed underneath, revealing the foundations of the original buildings. The entire plaza is right in the hustle and bustle of the big apple, however despite this the sombre and calm atmosphere that the entire area brings, remembering how the location was fresh after the disaster, it is a triumph in admiring and remembering a key moment in history, and doing it well.

These are just some of the amazing landmarks you should see in your lifetime, an entire list would much longer than this article, but research and go and explore these places for yourself!
