The Things I’m Looking for in Our Next Home

8th June 2021

I’ve talked so many times before about how we have wanted to move house for years now as we don’t like the area we live in, but it just hasn’t been the right time yet.

But I am always thinking about our next house; where I would love to move to and the things I would ideally like from our next home.

So here are some of the most important things I would like to have when we move house and what I would like from the area we move to.

A nice place to walk around

As I said, we don’t live in the best area now. It is (mostly) safe but it isn’t exactly a nice area to walk around in, and especially since getting a puppy we do have to walk around here more. I would love to feel like we are in a nice place as soon as we step out the front door, and the area we have wanted to move to for years is a really lovely village, with a river nearby for walks and always feels lovely to be, particularly when the weather is lovely.

There is no way Ava would play out on the street here, but that would be a possibility elsewhere, with supervision of course.

A driveway

We currently live in a terraced house so we don’t have a driveway at all and even though it’s not exactly an exciting thing to have, on a practical level it would make such a difference. The parking on our street now is pretty awful and I am not the world’s best parallel parker (only a slight understatement, there) so I would really love a driveway to pull onto instead of having to try and find a space on my road constantly.

Plus, it would also mean our car was safer from anyone doing anything to it as they walk past, like breaking off the wing mirror (yes, that’s happened).

Also, my dream is to own a motorhome so I would need a (big) drive for that!

When it comes to a driveway, it can really make a difference to how a house looks from the front, and I love a lovely-looking house with a big sweeping driveway!

The Yorkshire Resin Company are experts at creating practical (and lovely-looking!) driveways – either by transforming what you currently have or by doing a complete excavation. They complete all of the work themselves, so no pesky subcontractors, and they offer a full 10-year guarantee as well as great discounts for OAPs and NHS Employees. So if you’ve been searching for Resin Driveway Companies then make sure you have a look at them and see what they can do.

An extra bedroom

At the moment we have two proper bedrooms and then a third that you have to walk through to get to the bathroom so we use it as a kind of office/unintentional dumping ground.

I would love to have a third bedroom (and a fourth would be even better!) so that I could have a dedicated office space away from everything, plus ideally a spare bed in there for guests to stay.

We’re really lucky with our two bedrooms now, as they are pretty big, so I know we wouldn’t find or be able to afford anything with bedrooms this size in a much nicer area, but I would willingly sacrifice the size of bedrooms for more of them.

A bigger garden

This may be something that we have to compromise on depending on what is available in the area we want as well as what we can afford, but we only have a small garden right now, so we would all absolutely love a much bigger one if possible.

I’d really like to have separate patio areas, room to play badminton and other garden games together and room for the dog to be able to run around and play, plus space to grow herbs and vegetables (that I will keep alive).

A utility room

I would absolutely, absolutely love to have a utility room! It might not be the most exciting thing to most people, but the thought of having a separate room out the way to have a washing machine, sort clean laundry (and leave it there out the way until I have time to sort it!) is incredible to me. When I’m browsing Rightmove and I see a utility room I get more excited than I think I would if I saw a swimming pool! (OK, maybe not quite.)

I think it’s one of those things as an adult that makes you excited because of the thought of your house being neater and tidier and not having different piles of ‘stuff’ to sort out in every bloody room!

On that same note, I would also really appreciate a pantry so that all dry food could be stored away in one place and of course, it would always remain perfectly organised too!!

A downstairs loo

I’ve never had a downstairs loo before and it would be a great thing to have. A second toilet or bathroom in our home would be great anywhere, whether that’s downstairs or an ensuite, but it would great to have a second one, especially with children.

Some other things that would be lovely to have but are not absolutely necessary would be a garage (mainly for storage!), some lovely big trees (I love big trees!), an extra spare bedroom, and I would prefer it to be somewhere that doesn’t require an absolute ton of work. We did a renovation with this house before we moved in and I’m not entirely up for all of that again!

Is there anything in particular you would look for if you were moving house? Let me know in the comments.
