The Promise of a Prom {and Little Tips to Help You Prepare}

21st October 2019

I can clearly remember some of my school discos and the fun we had. In year 7 at Secondary School it was standing and watching the boys (including my future husband!) dancing, let’s say, creatively to Shaggy’s ‘Boombastic’ in the school hall, and in year 11 it was fancy dress and alcohol (how on earth did we get away with that!?) in a hired room with a proper dancefloor and wondering who would pull who that night.

Nowadays, things seem to be much more complicated and teenagers now have Proms to contend with and all that, that entails. This year I have seen so many more photos than in the past, of teenagers dressed to the nines (God that makes me sound old, and I don’t even know where it came from!), really made up, with their hair all done beautifully. We seem to have adopted the idea of proms from America and so it’s become a much bigger event here too.

There is so much more pressure nowadays on kids and parents to make a massive effort to enable them to be able to have this incredible night, and I can imagine it being quite overwhelming at that age knowing all of your friends will be going all out and spending potentially loads of money on dressing up for that one night. Your prom can be one of the most exciting nights of your life, so you do want to make sure that it is a memorable night for your child and that they have lots of amazing photos to look back on, but finding their perfect dress that they feel great in can be difficult and I can imagine how important to them, especially in this day and age, to get it right.

If you’re a busy mum, there are so many ways you can shop for a prom dress for your daughter these days. The internet is your oyster and buying something has never been easier, and it really can be lots of fun to be shopping for the prom.

Prom night can be one of the most fun and memorable events during your time at school. To avoid becoming overwhelmed while planning and prepping for prom, here are a few tips to help you prepare beforehand.

Don’t try anything too different with your makeup

You want to feel like your best self, not someone else who is overly made up. You are young and beautiful so embrace it. Especially if you have sensitive skin then it is best not to try new makeup on the night, and it is good to stick to what you know and feel comfortable.

Take lots of photos!

Take lots of photos, both before and during your prom so that you have those brilliant memories to look back on years down the line. Just like your wedding photos will one day be, your prom night photos will be ones you will probably want to keep forever.

Practice before

Do you intend to do your hair and makeup yourself? If so then make sure you do trial runs before the big night. You don’t want to be struggling to do a complicated updo on the evening of your prom and getting all stressed and hot and bothered. Keep it simple – uncomplicated styles always look best.

Take a comfy pair of shoes with you if you can

Especially if you’re not used to wearing heels a pair of slim shoes that can flatten down in your bag can really help towards the end of the night, and on your way home, especially if you have to walk anywhere.

Make sure you eat something and drink lots of water before you go

You could be waiting a while before you eat dinner so it’s a good idea to have a snack or something to line your stomach (as my mum used to always say to me when I was a teen!) and keep you going, especially if you are going to be drinking. And keep drinking lots of water throughout the night – I know it’s boring to think about but it’s so important!

Most importantly have fun!
