Your child’s health and mental well being should always be a top priority, and that is of course the same when it comes to their school and teachers. Pastoral Care in schools, then, is of great importance, and to stress that importance, we’ve teamed with a Nursery in Herefordshire to bring to you somethings you should know when it comes to Pastoral Care in schools.

Pastoral Care is the steps a school takes to help take care of a student’s physical and mental well being. It is a crucial part of any learning environment, as if a child feels secure, comfortable and well looked after then they are more likely to have a better time at school.

Where school can often seem like it focuses all on academic progress, Pastoral Care ensures that a student’s personal development is also being nurtured. Having a good Pastoral Care program should help ease any parent’s mind when it comes to their child’s well-being. Be it state schools or boarding schools, if a student knows that there is someone they can talk to about their problems, the more at ease in their surroundings they will be.

Studies have shown that students with a better sense of health and well-being largely perform better academically, thanks to feeling less anxious and supported. Good pastoral care in school is also fundamental to the development of social skills, which can help pupils feel better prepared for life outside of school.

It should be pretty easy to tell how seriously a school takes Pastoral Care. From asking questions about how experienced the staff is when it comes to counselling, to seeing what subjects they offer that help develop personal skills (like PSHE), you’ll be able to see how committed a school is to paying attention to personal development alongside academic studies.

Mental and physical well-being is just as important as successful grades, and Pastoral Care in schools is critical to helping your child feel supported and grow as an individual.
