Thinking of selling your home? Don’t forget to declutter first. Getting rid of all that excess stuff in your home could have many advantages when selling your home and moving. This post lists some of the biggest advantages.

Decluttering can increase the value of your home

Too much clutter in a home can make it look less attractive in pictures and during viewings. Even though all that stuff will not be there when the new owner moves in, they may find it hard to visualise themselves in your home when there’s so much of your stuff around. Clutter can also potentially make rooms look smaller. All of this doesn’t just affect how attractive your home is to buyers but also how much your home is valued at. By decluttering, you could boost the value of your home. Some owners simply put their clutter in self storage to get it out of the way. However, there could also be stuff that you can get rid of and sell.

Decluttering reduces time spent packing and unpacking

The more stuff you bring with you to your next home, the more you need to pack into boxes – and the more you need to unpack when you arrive in your new home. Reduce the time spent packing and unpacking by getting rid of some of the stuff that you don’t want to bring with you.

Decluttering can decrease moving costs

Having fewer possessions to move can also reduce moving costs. Many moving companies will choose a price based on the weight of your possessions and the number of journeys required. Decluttering could, therefore, reduce moving fees and save you some money. Plan to declutter well in advance to get an accurate quote.

Decluttering could help you raise money for the move

There could be many unwanted possessions in your home that you can sell. This could help you raise some extra cash to put towards moving costs like hiring a solicitor, hiring a moving company, or staging your home. While many items may be easier to donate or throw away, you should try to set aside some items that you think are of value. You could then try selling these online, selling them to a second-hand store or selling them at a car boot sale. Give yourself enough time to explore different selling options and find buyers by decluttering well in advance.

Decluttering encourages a fresh start

Moving home could be the start of a new chapter for you. You’ll be leaving behind your old home, so you may as well leave behind possessions that are part of that chapter of your life. That isn’t to say that you should get rid of everything – however, you should think about what possessions represent the new you. This could be a good time to use the Marie Kondo approach: ‘Does this item still bring me joy?’. This could involve getting rid of clothes you never wear anymore, dusty equipment from hobbies you’re no longer interested in and broken/dated furniture and appliances.
