The big bills can be an absolute pain to deal with, so being able to reduce them is one of the most important things for you to do today. At a time we are all tightening our belts and pinching our budgets, looking at ways you can reduce your utility bills – whether with bunded oil tanks in the garden – or with extra rugs in the living room, you need to do what you can do so that you can take down your big bills. Let’s take a look at how you can shave some of those pennies off of those costs.

  • Talk with your mortgage provider. If you call your mortgage provider, you can find out whether or not you can lower your mortgage costs. If all you’re doing right now is paying on interest and not actually paying the cost of your mortgage, it’s going to take you longer to pay it off. You might also find that you are eligible for a mortgage holiday, which is where you can have a break from paying your mortgage for a month or 2 to get yourself back on track with your payments. You might not want to refinance your mortgage entirely, but it is an option if you ask the bank.
  • Clean out your HVAC system. Did you know that almost 50% of energy bills pay for the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system in your home? It can be the biggest energy hog of the house. Whether you run your home with oil, electricity, or gas, if you overhaul your HVAC system, change out the air filters and seal the cooling ducts, you can reduce your energy by up to 20%. That means that you’re reducing your costs by that amount. Yes, overhauling your HVAC system is going to be expensive at first, but it’s also going to be one of the best things that you can do to help to take down your utility bills at home.
  • Get smart. If the HVAC system replacement is not going to be an option for you, why not look at installing a smart thermostat? The fact that you can automate this for heat can be one of the assets that you have in your home that you didn’t know you needed. By using a programmable thermostat, you’re going to preset the temperature based on when you’re actually at home, so you are not heating an empty house while you are out at work. Smart thermostats learn your living patterns to automatically adjust the temperature according to you. The upfront costs may be higher than you expect, but you have to look at this as an investment overall. This investment could save you a lot more money than you think.
  • Unplug your gadgets. You may not think that leaving the plugs in overnight is a problem, but electricity and energy still flow through your outlet. By switching off the outlet, you are going to massively cut your energy expenses. Even saving 5% of your energy bill is worth it. Just remember to plug everything back in in the morning before you try to make a coffee!
  • Cut your car costs. If you currently use a car to get to work or for social activities, then you need to figure out how to cut those costs down. For some people, it may be in renegotiating with a new insurance provider to save money. But for others, it could be that you are looking to cut the cost of the actual car you’re driving. One of the best ways to do this is to upgrade your car and buy a cheaper model. Upgrading your finances is not the same as upgrading your car. If you ensure that you are choosing a car that is more economical to run, or you are paying for an electric car that uses electricity to run, you’re going to take down the cost pretty quickly

There are many ways that you can cut your costs at home, and these are just the beginning. Try each of these points before you do anything else, and see whether or not your budget becomes more in the green than the red.
