Get into the Summer Spirit, With Summer Edition Gin from Rock Rose | Rock Rose Gin Review & Giveaway (Ended)

Summer is here, and even though I’m writing this whilst looking out the window at grey skies and the wind is blowing a gale, hopefully, we will be getting nice weather again very soon. Fingers crossed we haven’t already had our fill of summer on those gorgeous days in May and June!

But whatever the weather, I am hoping that over the next couple of months we can start to get outside a bit more and enjoy the fresh air during the school holidays and have no more homeschooling!

Now, I like a gin and tonic at any time of year (in any place, at any time!!) but Rock Rose Gin have created a summer edition gin, which is perfect for the warmer months!

Rock Rose Gin comes from multi-award-winning Dunnet Bay Distillers, which is located in the wilderness of the far north of Scotland and set up by a husband and wife team in 2014. The couple are passionate about handcrafting spirits that celebrate the heritage and provenance of Caithness, and they pride themselves on using local hand-foraged botanicals.

They are now one of the most celebrated distilleries in the UK, having received many awards, most recently the Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year at the Scottish Gin Awards as well as the Gold Award for Best Gin and Best Vodka at the first-ever The Grocer Drink Awards.

They are most known for their Rock Rose Gin which features a carefully selected collection of local and traditional botanicals including juniper berries, rowan berries and sea buckthorn. The name Rock Rose actually comes from one of these botanicals, the Rhodiola Rosea (a rose in the rocks), which adds a delicate floral note to the gin.

Rock Rose Gin Summer Edition

The Summer Edition Rock Rose Gin features the same base botanicals as the original but with some new seasonal additions sourced from the distillery gardens and rockery to give a different, seasonal taste. These include meadowsweet and elderflower to bring a light floral note to the gin, lemon balm which brings a complex citrus flavour, clover to add notes of tangy, sweet, lemongrass, as well as lemon thyme and pineapple sage.

The signature ceramic bottle has also been given a fresh look for summer. I love the style of the bottles; they’re so pretty and I’m definitely going to keep mine after it’s finished to use as a vase! They actually do a refill pouch for their signature gin which I think is a great idea — it saves you a bit of money, plus the pouch is fully recyclable if you pop it in a postbox back to them; you don’t even need a stamp or envelope! I think that’s such a clever idea and love that it minimises waste.

The Rock Rose Gin Summer Edition is so nice. You can really taste the citrusy notes but without it being at all overwhelming. It’s perfect to enjoy with lots of ice, tonic and a slice of lemon whilst sat in the garden on a warm evening; it’s so light, refreshing and tasty. I’ve also had it with some fresh raspberries in it that I foraged straight from my garden (haha) and that was delicious too. I’m trying to make it last so I’m alternating it with my cheapo gin but every time I have a G&T with Rock Rose gin I can really tell the difference and I just want to keep drinking it. It’s really so lovely.

I love the care that goes into making their spirits and their desire to use their own botanicals. For this summer edition, they did lots of research, and their gardener planted, harvested and dried the botanicals that have gone into the gin! I just love products and brands that use as many natural ingredients as possible and especially from the environment around them.

Apparently it’s also great with a sprig of thyme or borage flowers and tonic. The borage flowers are cucumber-like and bring a nice coolness to the drink. Dunnet Bay also make their own Lemon Thyme Liquid Garnish to go with their gins, which sounds delicious! They have a range of four different ones which you add into your drink with a dropper and they all sound lovely. I think they’d make a lovely gift with a bottle of gin or just as a small gift for a gin lover, as the bottle with a dropper they come in is really pretty too.
