Prepping, Packing, and More: A Three-Pronged Attack to Moving House in Record Time

Moving house is one of those things we can dread. After all, there’s a reason it’s one of the most stressful things we can undergo, but sometimes, we’re in a position where we have no choice but to move, particularly those who rent properties. There was a massive slew of landlords selling their homes because they couldn’t afford to maintain them during the earlier stages of the cost of living crisis in the UK, but moving house doesn’t have to be hugely stressful as long as you make sure you have control over the process. Don’t panic, it’s all about having a strategic approach!
The Pre-Packing Stage
Moving quickly is all about maximising your time. Before you contact the removal company and think you need to order the largest van, you need to consider some pre-packing practices.
Be ruthless with your decluttering because, ultimately, the less you have, the less you need to pack, move, and unpack. If you have time, you can sell things online or responsibly dispose of anything that’s beyond repair or use, and let’s not forget that at this point, a detailed moving checklist will be your best friend. Make sure everything is on there, from notifying your bank and utilities of your address change to booking the removal company and deep cleaning the old place.
Also, remember to stockpile your supplies, from boxes to markers, bin bags, and several rolls of packing tape. You’ve got no time to mess around, so make sure you have everything.
The Right Packing Hacks
It’s all about doing it with speed and efficiency. Tackle the least-used rooms first, such as storage areas or anywhere that doesn’t contain your daily essentials. Clearly label every box with the room it belongs to and a brief description of the contents.
If you want to be more organised, perhaps use a colour-coding system for each room. When packing, make life easier for yourself on the other side by placing items directly into drawers if they’re removable, as this will save space. Keep clothes on hangers and group them together by taping around the hooks.
Another handy tip is to pack a separate bag or box with everything you need for moving day and the first night in your new home, such as a change of clothes, toiletries, medication, etc. You should also pack a box of essentials for the new house when you arrive, including toilet roll, cleaning supplies, and other must-haves.
On Moving Day
If you’ve hired a removal company to handle everything, you still need to supervise and direct them, so clearly communicate where each box goes and answer any questions they may have. They’re not psychic!
When transporting things in your own car, make sure you keep important documents, jewellery, and other valuables either on your person or in your own vehicle, and if you can get access to your new home before everything comes in, maybe give it a quick clean to make unpacking and settling in far more pleasant.
A successful, quick move is tough, but with a well-thought-out plan and a focused approach, you can absolutely conquer this challenge!
