On Buying a New Car: Realistic Options & the Dream!

4th September 2023

I love cars. If I were really rich, I would own a proper swanky-danky car as well as a more practical but still beautiful car, maybe a Range Rover (or something similar but less gas-guzzling), as I love being up high in a vehicle. Oh, I would also absolutely love a campervan to do road trips in.

My dream car was always a Porsche Carrera S in dark grey, but I’m over that now, and I would choose something higher off the ground and chunkier-looking. I do love an Aston Martin, though, so maybe that could be my second car.

Anyway, now that we’ve got that out of the way, I ought to come back down to reality as there are no expensive cars in my near future unless I win the lottery.

However, we are looking to replace our current car in the not-so-distant future, maybe the next year or so, so we have been discussing what kind of thing we would want. I loved our car (Hyundai i30) when we first got it, but now the wing mirror is sellotaped on, it has a few scratches and a dent (not me, your honour), and I’m just bored of it and want something different and newer (not that that’s a reason we would get something new).

We could also do with something a bit bigger now for the growing child and the dog and all of our stuff when we go away if we can find something bigger we can afford.

I’ve never been bothered about getting a brand-new car as they just decrease in value too quickly for my liking, but I would love something that’s pretty new.

Getting a car on finance is not something I ever considered, but now I think it would be something we might do if we work out we can definitely afford the monthly payments as it would be a way to get something much better than we’ve had before. We wouldn’t go crazy (my husband is far too sensible for that), and we would always work out what we can afford to spend on a new car before looking properly at them, but we have started looking a bit and thinking about what we would like and what we need from a new car.

I would like to get an electric car for the benefit of our planet, but I don’t think that is something that is in our budget yet. Presumably, our car purchase after this one will have to be an electric car, and they will be much more widely available by then, although I do wonder what will happen to all of the non-electric cars that exist at that time. It seems like such a waste.

My husband is way more practical than I am, so he will always go for function over form, whereas I need my car to look as beautiful as possible, too! We will, of course, consider fuel consumption for our next car. In the past, that would have been solely about how much it costs us, but now it’s about the planet, too – I think we’re all much more aware now, thankfully.

Some of the cars we are (apparently) thinking about next include the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V, or Skoda Karoq (but I’m not keen on this one!), although it all depends on what is available at the time and their prices, and this isn’t a definitive list. My favourite out of these is the Mazda CX-5, I think – I love a good chunky car, and it looks nice in the red it comes in.

Of course, as well as the cost of the car itself, there are other costs to consider, such as tax and MOT costs, fuel costs and finance if we were to use that. It’s really helpful to see the difference costs laid out if we were to pay a particular amount for a car or a monthly finance option, as well as calculating the other costs such as fuel efficiency so you can get the best available to you for your budget.

I love looking at cars as we’re driving along and eyeing up all the gorgeous, fast ones, so I’m looking forward to choosing our next new car and seeing what we end up with! I’m also looking forward to winning the lottery!

This is a collaborative post.
