I love cake. My daughter loves cake. I would choose cake over chocolate every time nowadays, and my daughter has the biggest sweet tooth and would eat cake all day long if I let her.
Now, none of us are vegan or have any allergies, but I am still aware of how hard it has always been to get treats that are vegetarian or vegan whilst being tasty and easy enough to find in supermarkets.
OGGS® cakes are vegan-friendly which means they are free from all of the usual animal products you find in cakes – so no eggs or dairy. Instead, OGGS cakes are made with Aquafaba; an all-plant egg alternative which is made with only water and chickpea extract. OGGS also have their own ready-made Aquafaba product that is available to buy and you can get a free sample if you fill in the form that comes up on this page.
The company itself are really ethical and are constantly trying to improve on their sustainability and positively impact the planet, animals and people. Their packaging is all made from either 100% recycled, plant-based or sustainably-sourced materials and is all recyclable or compostable too.
They source ethically, work with charities and organisations including 8 Billion Trees and The Passage, have a target to have zero food waste by 2021, and hope to be using 100% renewable energy sources as soon as possible.
We were sent the OGGS Marvellous Mini Vanilla Cupcakes to try, which are just 88 calories per cake and are a really nice size for a little treat. The cakes are really nice, moist and light and have a good flavour. I don’t think I would have been able to tell they were vegan if I didn’t know. The vanilla flavour wouldn’t be my choice to be honest, and I would love to try some of the other delicious-sounding flavours they do – zesty lemon or chocolate fudge would be my first choices. They also do victoria sponge cakes, chocolate fudge cupcakes and a large lemon or chocolate celebration cake too, as well as mince pies later in the year.
My daughter was so excited to try the cupcakes (and had to be patient until I had photographed them!) and she really enjoyed them. The vanilla cupcakes have little sprinkles on the top, so they are very appealing to kids and they are a great option for children who have an egg or dairy allergy.
I think it’s great that OGGS have created these plant-based alternatives for vegans or anyone with an egg or dairy allergy, giving them a great option to enjoy. The only downside for me is the price – they are certainly not a cheap option, at £4.25 for a pack of four (or 9 mini cupcakes) so you don’t get loads for your money as a family. I would go for one of the larger cakes for us as they don’t cost much more than the individual smaller ones.
