Kittens do require care and attention but as your cat grows up, you can start leaving them home alone with their food and water. They do not need a companion all the time. This is great for people who work long hours and do not have someone at home all the time to look after their pets.
If you have decided to finally bite the bullet and get a cat, there are a few things that you should know. Your kitten will require a few supplies that will be essential for taking care of them. You should ideally have these before you get your cat to your house. Also, make sure to play with your cat a little before you bring him home so that he gets used to you. They need to be familiar with your smell so that they are not caught off-guard. If you want them to adjust quickly, bring back some of their toys from the adoption centre since these will have the kitten’s smell on them. In order to make your house the ‘purrfect’ fit for your cat, here are the supplies that you will need.
Every cat owner should have a carrier or a crate for their cat. You will need one in order to get them home safely from the adoption centre. Make sure that the carrier you use is sturdy enough and does not break. It should have a ton of ventilation to make sure that your kitten gets proper oxygen. It should also have a gate that will give easy access to your kitten to go in and out.
Try getting one with a mesh door so that it can even be used as a sleeper for the first few days. On your way back from the adoption centre, be sure to keep putting your hand inside and petting them so that they do not get scared of the movement caused by the vehicle. Also, place some soft materials like a towel on the base of the crate to make it cosier.
The second most important thing that you should have in your home is separate bowls for their water and food. Some cat owners prefer using separate bowls for wet and dry food as well. You can get a basic bowl in which you have to pour food and water, or you can try something fancy. There is a lot of new technology available in the market that gives us bowls that pour food for the cat from time to time itself.
There are also water bowls that come with a filter and clean the water every hour to remove impurities. If you get a normal bowl, make sure that it is easy to clean. The bowls should also be heavy so that they do not tip over when your cat eats or drinks. You can try getting shallow bowls if you have a small cat. These should be cleaned daily as a lot of dust and dirt can accumulate in them. Be sure to keep them far away from the litter otherwise your cat might just get sick.
Do you know what the best thing is about having cats? You do not need to take them out in order for them to relieve themselves. All you need is some good litter and a litterbox so that they can go whenever they want. There are quite a few litter boxes to choose from. You can even go all out and get a self-cleaning litter box so that you never have to clean it again. This mechanism will clean the litter after the kitten has used the box.
These are quite expensive so it is probably best to buy them when you have extra money. You should also be mindful and should use Premium Kitty Litter so that your cat does not get urinary tract infections.
Some owners prefer getting their cats a hooded box so that they have some privacy as well. The most basic option is getting a plain plastic box that will hold kitty litter inside it. This is simple but needs to be looked after on a regular basis.
Your cats will not eat anything and everything like dogs usually do. They need certain types of food that will help fulfill their nutritional requirements. There are quite a few varieties to choose from. You should try to find out the type of food they used to have at the breeders or the adoption center because they are used to the taste. You can also get some wet food that contains ingredients such as tuna chunks, which are their favorite. Be sure to alternate between wet food and dry food so that they get enough of both. You can also get them some treats but make sure that it only gives them 10-20% of their daily nutritional intake.
Cats often need to scratch, and if they do not have a scratch post they will end up scratching your furniture. It is important to get them one so that your furniture stays safe and their urges are taken care of. Be sure to get one that has a sturdy base and is long enough to let them stretch fully while scratching. You can even get one that has a small rattle ball on the top so that your cat stays entertained during the times that you are not home. There are a few that even have catnip rattle balls to engage your cat’s attention.
It is quite important to know what you’re getting into before you get a cat. Make sure that you have all these essential items so that your cat feels loved and safe at your house.
