How to Raise an Academically Minded Child

11th February 2023

The key to raising academically minded children is getting them passionate about school. When they start to care and see the value in it, they will start paying more attention and have the motivation to study without the need of you nagging them. But how do you do that? Forget school for a second and talk about what they’re into. Learn about their passions and interests to help them identify their dream job and what they want to do when they’re older. They will begin to see how it all fits in and how important it is to focus and study hard.

We spoke to an independent school in London on the matter and they shared some tips with us which we’ve included below.

Talk About School

As a parent, you undoubtedly have an effect on your child. They will adopt the behaviours and attitudes that you display. This includes your attitude towards education. If you demonstrate an interest in their school work and push them to do better, they will begin to see how important it is and take school seriously.

Explore Your Own Goals and Aspirations

Following on from the point made above, you can set a good example and encourage your child to take charge of their learning by doing so yourself. Learning never stops, there are always ways that we can develop ourselves and grow as people, even as parents.

Set Goals

It’s also wise to set goals. As well as longer-term goals like we touched on earlier, shorter-term goals help to keep us on track, stay motivated and see the progress that we’ve made. You can set these with your child by breaking up their longer-term goals and identifying the specifics that they will need.

Create a Study Schedule

A study schedule can help your child get into the habit of studying and they will be more naturally inclined to do their work.
