How to Motivate Your Child to Learn

It can be a struggle to get your child to do their work. Especially as there are so many distractions and their desire to learn simply falls short. We have teamed up with a prep school in Sevenoaks to share a few tips on how to motivate your child to learn.

Utilise Their Interests

Learning can be made fun by using interests like football to explain certain concepts. To encourage your child to do their homework, you can create word problems around a particular theme or rephrase their questions in a way that intrigues and makes sense to them.

Explain its Importance

Another way that you can renew your child’s interest is by explaining the importance of their studies. Use practical everyday examples to show how important the topics that they are learning in school are. This might be how important maths is to be financially savvy and how English is needed to understand important documents and persuade others.

Use Praise

Praise can let your child know that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed and encourage them to work harder. Using positive language to talk about ways that they can improve can help to protect their confidence and reduce the feeling of frustration when they make mistakes.

Cater to Their Learning Style

We all interpret information differently, some of us learn better when doing something hands-on while others prefer visuals like presentations and graphs. Knowing which learning style your child leans towards can help you to make their studying more effective and engaging. The three main learning styles are visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. Recently this has been expanded and there are now four more that have joined the list. This can easily be determined by a short personality quiz.

See If There’s Anything That’s Bothering Them

Talking to your child will help you to see if there are any problems that they’re experiencing at school or in their social life that’s distracting them from their work. By allowing them to confide in you, you can relieve some of that burden and create a plan of how to help.
