How to Make Your Home and Garden Safer

Safety is something that homeowners should be concerned about. A substantial number of injuries are inflicted as a result of accidents in the home each year. After all, the home is where we spend the majority of our time. If we can do anything to lower the risk, then it’s probably worth doing.

Why Home and Garden Safety Starts with Secure Fixings

Often, accidents occur when things are not properly secured in place. Over time, decorative elements in your garden might work their way loose. Hanging baskets, paving slabs, and wobbly gates have all been a cause of injury.

The best way to deal with these problems is by being proactive. Don’t wait for a loose fixing to reveal itself; instead, seek the problems out and address them before they have a chance to cause harm.

Securing Indoor Fixtures and Fittings

Inside the house, certain wall-mounted elements will need to be robust enough to survive daily use. Stair rails, bannisters, and shelving will all need to be attached using the right wall plugs, screws, and nailers.

Of course, doing the necessary work without creating additional safety risk is not always straightforward. Cordless tools tend to be preferable, since trailing cables pose a hazard. Cordless nailers, for example, are a great asset in any home.

Outdoor Structures That Deserve Attention

Certain outdoor structures are often vulnerable, especially in strong winds. These tend to be panel-based structures, like decking, sheds, and fencing. Ensuring these items are securely fastened will reduce the risk of them being swept away (and colliding with an object or person).

Making Garden Spaces Safer for Families and Pets

The safety precautions you take in the garden might depend on the shape of your family. If small children and pets are going to be roaming around, then the need to watch out for trip hazards, raised beds, and sharp corners might be particularly pressing. Keeping patios nice and flush is one effective way to reduce the likelihood of a trip. Your choice of plants and flowers might make a difference, too.

Speed and Consistency for Ongoing Maintenance

The more quickly and conveniently you can address a particular problem, the more likely you’ll be to get it fixed. This is another reason that cordless tools are so worthwhile. At the bottom of the garden, you might lack easy access to a convenient power source – and so a battery-powered tool might be preferable to a mains-powered one.

Safety When DIYing

Of course, you should take safety seriously when you’re performing any DIY task. Make sure you read the instructions for any tool you’re using and wear the appropriate personal protective equipment. Using an angle grinder without goggles carries the risk that a metal shard could fly into your eyes. So don’t do it!
