How to Make Life’s Biggest Decisions Feel Really Special

Big decisions can have a funny (or not-so-funny) way of stopping us right in our tracks because they are just that – big. It could be a career choice, deciding where to live, or saying yes to spending forever with a special someone, but whatever it is, the fact that these decisions carry a lot of extra meaning and weight can make them feel much more exciting, and that’s something that should be celebrated. With that in mind, and instead of getting bogged down and stressed out, here are some tips to help you make the actual decision-making as meaningful as the decision itself – read on to find out more.

Take Longer With Decision-Making

It’s crucial to remember that big decisions don’t need immediate answers – or at least, they shouldn’t. In reality, although there are definitely times when you need to think of a solution quickly, when it’s something life-changing, you should be able to take all the time you need without any penalties. True, there might be times when you know the answer right away (perhaps if someone asks you to marry them and you instantly want to go shopping for engagement rings, for example), but if you feel you need more time – no matter what the question is or was – take it.

And of course, when you’ve got more time to make a decision, you can do it in any way that works for you – you might think back on memories made to help you get to your answer, or perhaps you prefer to make a list of pros and cons. It could be that you take the opportunity to talk to friends and family to get all your ideas (and their opinions) out in the open, and so on. The key is to take as much time as you need so you can be sure about your final answer.

Celebrate Each Step

In some cases, a big decision can be made but you still need to make lots of smaller decisions to get to your final goal, and that’s where the difficulties can lie – you know where you want to end up, but it’s hard trying to work out how to get there. That’s perfectly normal, and it’s all about taking each decision at a time and thinking things through.

If there are lots of steps, such as if you were changing your career, for example, and you need to work out how to do it, or you’re planning a fun vacation and you need to decide where to stay, what to do, and how to get there (among other things), why not celebrate as you make each smaller decision? If you celebrate, just a little, when you reach each milestone (got your budget sorted? Booked your flights? Chosen your bridesmaids?), you’ll feel much more motivated to keep going until you find you’ve made a big life decision fairly easily.

Involve the People Who Matter

We briefly mentioned talking to friends and family above, and it’s an important point – not only to help you make your decision but to help you make it feel really special too. When you think about it, aren’t the biggest decisions often better when you can share them with people you love and care about?

These are the people who support you the most, and they might even be included in your choice in some way (if you’re moving house or going travelling or you’re looking for a new job that pays less – or more – then involving them just makes sense for you and them.
