Helping Your Child Become More Confident

12th May 2020

Confidence is an important skill that serves us well throughout life. Essentially, it can determine whether or not we feel comfortable trying new things, meeting new people and ultimately whether or not we are successful in our future jobs. With this in mind, it’s important for parents to help their children become more confident. But how do we do this? I have teamed up with an independent day school and nursery in Hertfordshire to offer parents some guidance.

First of all, be sure to set your child some small, achievable goals as often as possible. Having responsibilities will allow them to feel capable and in control. What’s more, once these goals have been achieved, your child will feel a sense of accomplishment. These responsibilities could be as simple as setting the table or taking the bins out, or something like walking two miles a day for a week. Be sure to praise your child when they achieve these goals. Feeling proud, capable, accomplished, in control and responsible will all contribute to improved confidence.

When it comes to schoolwork, never criticise your child if they don’t get the grades they were hoping for. As long as they tried their best, they deserve your praise. If you put too much pressure on them and show disappointment if they don’t achieve something, they will only feel disheartened and self-conscious. As a result, they won’t want to try again in the future as they will lack the confidence, they need to take the risk. With all this in mind, aim to use positive terminology around your kids as much as possible.

Encourage your child to join some extra-curricular activities. This will help them learn new skills and make new friends, again contributing to improved confidence. Essentially, the more they experience and achieve whilst they’re young, the less likely they are to fear trying new things as they grow up.

Always be a good role model for your child, demonstrating healthy social interactions and good manners. Let them know that your love is completely unconditional and that obstacles, failings and setbacks are a natural part of life.
