7 Fantastic Family-Friendly Vacation Ideas for Exploring the Mediterranean

Source

The wonderful thing about travel is that it’s a great way to give your children new experiences that they’ll never forget. There are so many different places in the world to explore, and it’s worth getting the most out of every minute.

In this post, we’re going to consider the Mediterranean. This is a stunning part of the world, consisting of the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. It can also include some countries that don’t actually have a coast in the Mediterranean itself, but are in the region. Mediterranean countries are also found in southern Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa, so loads of different cultures and languages are included.

After that little bit of geography, let’s look at some of the ways you and your family can enjoy the Mediterranean.

A Luxury All-Inclusive Trip

For some reason, some people seem to feel as though they can’t take their kids on a luxury vacation. But kids can appreciate luxury just as much as an adult, and they deserve it just as much as anyone else. While you don’t want to spoil your kids all the time, there’s no need to miss out on luxury experiences just because they’re under a certain age.

So, whether they’re teenagers or younger, make an effort to show your kids what luxury travel can be. Consider staying in an all-inclusive resort and, when appropriate, take them to restaurants with higher ratings.

True, very young children and babies might not be the best guests at a Michelin-star restaurant, especially because the other guests have also paid a premium for the experience. But you can still enjoy some luxury experiences even with toddlers in tow. And, once your children are old enough to understand basic table manners, you can teach them how to enjoy some of the finer things in life.

Diving into the Cuisine

Mediterranean food is famous around the world, but one of the biggest mistakes people make is to put all food from this region in one neat box. As mentioned before, there are loads of different Mediterranean countries that span different continents, which leaves loads of room for variation.

Rather than going to one country and expecting something that aligns with your view of what Mediterranean food should look like, instead, try to embrace the cuisine of where you are. While there are similar ingredients and flavour profiles in some dishes in different Mediterranean countries, there are also plenty of differences.

By sticking to the local flavours of where you are, you increase your chances of getting the best quality possible. One of the things that does cross countries is the emphasis on freshness. The fresher the ingredients, the better the dish.

So, while you should absolutely try your favourite dishes, don’t be afraid to experiment a little and try some lesser-known dishes from the area you’re staying in. Your children will also benefit from trying new things.

Archaeology and History Adventures

Most of the countries in the Mediterranean have a very long and storied history, so one of the best ways you and your family can get the most out of the areas you’re visiting is to learn as much as you can about their past. This is also great for your children, because while they’re going to have fun, they will have opportunities to learn as well.

For example, if you’re visiting Greece and want to look further than the classical history that many people associate with Greece, then consider visiting Mycenae. Mycenae is an ancient Greek city and archaeological site that predates the classical Greek era, and you can really see how people lived thousands of years ago.

When visiting any archaeological site, it’s important to be respectful of the area and the people around you. Don’t stray from marked areas where you’re allowed to travel, but don’t be afraid to ask questions, especially if you’re part of a tour.

Visiting Different Cities

While you don’t necessarily need to spend your entire trip to the Mediterranean running around trying to see as many places as possible, it’s definitely worth exploring a few different cities. As well as the bigger, more popular cities, consider visiting some of the lesser-known hidden gems in the Mediterranean as well. This way, you don’t just see everything that’s put on display for tourists, but you can enjoy the culture as people live it.

Enjoying a Mediterranean Cruise

One of the best ways to explore different cities is by going on a cruise. A Mediterranean cruise can really help you and your family soak in the best of this region by exploring the sea itself.

Some of the best cruises allow you to experience luxurious accommodations and facilities, while also taking you to some of the most beautiful places along the coast. Many cruises also involve tours of different areas, so you can learn a lot more about the city you’re visiting. If possible, try to explore for yourself as well.

As always, make sure to book a child-friendly cruise, as there will be more activities for your children to enjoy.

Exploring Remote Beaches

As well as different cities and towns, you should definitely take advantage of some of the stunning beaches along the Mediterranean. While a lot of these beaches are crowded, you can find some hidden gems that are a lot more remote and isolated.

True, it’s harder to get to these beaches, but it’s definitely worth the extra effort. As always, make sure to treat the area with respect and take your trash home with you so the next visitors can enjoy it as well.

Taking Something Home

Finally, you should consider picking up a souvenir to take home with you. If you go to the beaches, some rocks could be a nice souvenir, but be careful when picking up shells, as they might not be allowed through customs.

Otherwise, you could support local small businesses and buy something to take back with you.
