Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Packing Properly When Moving House

28th June 2018

Moving house is a big deal! In fact, it can be one of the most exciting and stressful times in your entire life! Happily, there are many things you can do to reduce the stress of this experience, one of which is to get organised and pack properly, something that can make the moving day, as well as unpacking,  go a lot smoother. Read on to find out more.

Declutter first

It’s pretty impossible to pack up an entire home effectively if you have a lot of items that you no longer need cluttering up the place. Sadly, this is what we often discover we are dealing with when it comes time to move. Therefore if you have a junk room, a garage or a shed full of stuff you meant to take to the tip but didn’t have time to, or your under-bed space is packed with shoes you haven’t worn since 1995, it’s time for a clear out.

Luckily, this isn’t too much of a tough job to do, especially if you do it first before you begin packing in earnest. Work in an organised way and go room by room dividing items into keep, donate, and throw piles. Try and complete each room before starting the next as well, as then it will be much more manageable to keep on top of.

Pack in advance

Once your decluttering is over it’s time to start packing. Yes, you don’t have to wait until two days before the movers are due to arrive. In fact, if you get this done early, it can save you a lot of unnecessary stress. Make sure you make a detailed house moving checklist as soon as you know you are moving so that nothing gets forgotten and you be as organised as possible.

Of course, to pack efficiently, you will need to know the layout of your new home, as then you can label the boxes by room and place items directly into them. Then when you come to unpack you will already have everything you need for each space to hand.

It is also useful to pack in this way because it means if you have any treasured possessions or pieces of furniture that you cannot bear to part with, yet will not fit into the new house, you can put them into storage. You may even find that your removal company will offer a storage facility too, just like Bekins Moving Solutions do. Something that can once again help to make the entire process of moving a lot easier.

Get the right packing materials

Lastly, to pack correctly, you’ll have to have the right packing materials. Although, these may not entirely be what you expect. Yes, you will need sturdy boxes and thick packing tape, but you may be able to cut down on the bubble wrap and tissue paper by using items that you already have around the home.

For example, instead of wrapping your wine glasses in tissue paper, why not stuff them with socks to protect the inside and wrap them in towels or towels to protect the outside? Then, not only will you have packed up your most fragile item correctly, but you will have saved money on packing materials too!
