Designing a Bedroom That Feels Like a Sanctuary
Designing a bedroom that meets your needs and acts as a personal sanctuary isn’t always easy to get right. You can spend more time and money than necessary without a plan of attack for the space. So, from setting the colours to the flow and layout of the room, here are some ideas.

Focus on Personal Comfort
Personal comfort is paramount in the bedroom. In a room where you are at your most vulnerable, you must always feel at ease and relaxed. From dressing yourself to life’s most intimate moments, the bedroom plays a critical role in your story. Something like a night dress for women provides luxurious comfort among luscious textiles and elegant bedding. When you get into bed, it should feel like you have entered a world of peace, serenity and comfort.
Set the Neutral Tone
Many people choose to ignore the role that colours play in a room. Colour psychology teaches that specific shades and tones can influence how you feel, including comfort, temperature and mood. For the bedroom, calming colours such as blues, greens and greys are recommended. However, these are best used as complementary colours to main neutrals such as beige, cream and off-white. Neutral colours aren’t imposing and help with mood, while being aesthetically pleasing.
Designing a Bedroom that Soothes
A study by Mental Health UK found that 25% of people aren’t getting enough restorative sleep. There are many ways to relax and recharge each night that help you sleep well and wake up feeling refreshed. However, there are also some extras you can use for counting more sheep:
- Dim the lights when getting into bed to create a soft and cosy atmosphere in the room.
- Break out a scented candle, diffuser or scented humidifier for aromatherapy.
- Use a music app, YouTube or a sound machine for various types of noise for sleep.
Consider the Flow and Layout
Some people choose to make a bedroom more than somewhere to sleep, while others go with a totally minimalist approach. Whatever style you decide upon, always consider the layout and flow of the space. Given that we spend most of our bedroom time in the dark, it would help to ensure there aren’t randomly placed items in the room, or your poggies will regret it! A well-organised space with plenty of storage for clothing helps keep your toes safe in the dark.
Remove Unwanted Distractions
There are many things that people enjoy when they get in bed besides you know what! Watching TV in bed is pretty common these days as people enjoy streaming from anywhere. Tablets and phones are also used a lot in bed, as most people keep themselves entertained and informed. However, any of these can cause unwanted distractions that can hinder your comfort when it comes to sleeping. Notifications, staying awake and signals also impact your sleep.
Summary
Focusing on personal comfort should be a primary factor when designing a bedroom as a personal escape. A soothing space with warmth, aromas and even gentle sounds can make all the difference. However, this can be shattered by unwanted distractions from electronic devices.
