Could Your Home be Harming Your Health?

If there’s one thing that all homeowners have in common, it’s that we want our homes to be a safe space to live in. Your own little world that’s clean, cosy and all yours. You relax there, you unwind there, but did you know that your home might actually be a danger to your health? Even the cleanest and neatest homes might still have dangers that you’re unaware of, so let’s take a look at some of the hidden dangers that could be harming your health.

Mould

Mould is an unwelcome guest in any home. The problem with mould is that it thrives in damp and humid areas like bathrooms and cellars. And, once it’s there, it’s not easy to get rid of. If you leave it alone, you’ll be breathing in mould spores that can lead to all sorts of health issues like asthma flare-ups, allergies, and other respiratory problems. If you notice any mould in your home, scrub it with white vinegar or bleach as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to add more ventilation to the rooms that have mould so that there’s less chance of it coming back.

Cleaning products

Cleaning products are great for cleaning your home, but many of them contain harsh chemicals that aren’t very good for your health. Have you ever used a cleaning product and had to step outside for fresh air? That’s your body telling you that the chemicals you’ve inhaled aren’t doing you any favours. Not only can harsh chemicals trigger respiratory problems, but some conventional cleaners have ingredients that can disrupt your hormones. Switch to a natural alternative or make your own using things like white vinegar and baking soda.

Pests

Even the idea of pests in the home can make someone feel unwell, but they are a real problem that needs to be kept on top of. Pests like cockroaches, mice and dust mites can trigger allergies and spread all kinds of germs and bacteria around your home. Regularly check your home for signs of pests like droppings, chewed up food packaging, and even holes around your home that weren’t there before. If you notice anything, get an exterminator in to get rid of the problem permanently.

The air

Indoor air pollution is a real problem that not many people know about. If you’re always sneezing or have lots of headaches, it might be due to pet hair or even the candles you’re burning. Make sure you let fresh air in as often as possible, and consider getting an air purifier to help filter out the nasty stuff.

Your mattress

Finally, if you haven’t swapped out your mattress in years, there’s a good chance it’s full of dust mites, dead skin cells, and all kinds of other bacteria from years of use. Make sure you flip and clean your mattress on a regular basis, and invest in a decent mattress protector to help protect you and your health. Also, if you have an old mattress, maybe consider replacing it too!
